Install Trailer Wiring
Template:StubThere are two parts of wiring up trailer brake lights: you need to wire the car, and the trailer. Both parts of the process are fairly simple to do, as explained in this article.
Steps
Wiring on the Car
- Check to see if your car has wiring connectors for a trailer already hooked up.
- Close to where your trailer attaches mechanically, there should be a flat 4 prong connector (most common) or a round connector that the trailer lights plug into (for larger trailers and on trucks).
- If you have one of these skip to Part 2; otherwise continue reading.
- Find out what connector you need. Most likely you will need a 4 prong connector. You can get one of these by going to a truck/trailer company like U-Haul and having them look up the right one for your vehicle.
- To put it in, you simply remove your tail lights, unplug your brake lights, plug in the connector, plug back in the lights, and reassemble everything.
Trailer Wiring
- Go to any automotive store and get a 4 prong trailer lighting connector (if you have lights but no wiring) or get the connector and lighting combo.
- Check the wiring diagrams that came with your items and mount the ground wire to a metal piece of the trailer frame.
- Safely run the wires to the lights they need to go to and connect them. If you got lights as well they should bolt in after you drill holes into the trailer.
