Text from a Computer to a Cell Phone

Need to send a text to someone, even yourself, and don't have a phone handy? You can send text messages through your email program, or you can use a variety of different messaging programs.

Steps

Using Email

1. Open your email program or service.
2. Compose a new message.
3. Enter the telephone number as the beginning of the address, including the area code. Don't include any dashes. For example, (555)555-1234 would be 5555551234@.
4. Enter the domain for the service you are texting. You will need to know the recipient's carrier. Add the domain to the end of the address. For example, if the number in the previous step was on AT&T, the address would be 555551234@txt.att.net.

   • If you are sending an image, use the MMS address if applicable.
   • If the carrier you want isn't listed above, check their support site
5. Send your message. You can send your message as you normally would. Your recipient should receive it a few moments later.

Using a Website

1. Find a free texting website. There are a variety of services that allow you to send texts from your web browser to a phone. Popular sites include:
   • SendSMSNow
   • AFreeSMS
   • TXT2Day
2. Be wary of spam. Using these sites may attract spam to the device you send the message to. Check the site's privacy policies to be sure that your information isn't being sold.
3. Select the country. Use the drop-down menu to select the country of the recipient.
4. Type in the phone number. Enter in the phone number and area code, without any punctuation.
5. Enter your message. You usually have between 130-160 characters, depending on the service.
6. Send the message. Your recipient will receive the message within a few moments.

Use a Messaging Program

1. Download the appropriate app for your phone. For iPhone users, iMessage comes already installed. For Android users, Hangouts (previously known as Talk) comes already installed. These programs allow for messages to be sent to clients on multiple platforms.
   • There are also other programs that offer similar functionality, such as Install-Skype.
2. Run the corresponding program on the computer. To use Hangout on a PC, visit the Hangout website and download the extensions. To use iMessage from your computer, you must be running a Mac with OS X 10.8 or later. You will find the Messages icon in your Dock.
   • You will need to sign in with your respective account (Google, Apple ID, or Microsoft account).
3. Send your message. Select the contact from the list or type in a name to search. You can enter your own name to send a message to yourself.
