Throw a Dog a Birthday Party

Everybody loves their dogs, right? People birthdays are very special, so why shouldn't your favorite pet's birthday be just as fun? Here are some ideas to give your dog a super fun birthday!

Steps

Planning the Party/The Invitations and Date

  1. Look at your dog's pedigree. Find the date of your dog's birthday. If your dog's birthday is on a weekday or inconvenient day for you, make the party date on a weekend close to your dog's birthday. *If your dog is without a pedigree, you still should check your calender for a convenient date. Make sure the party will not be on a holiday or a day when most people can't make it (i.e Monday!).
  2. If you adopted a dog from the Pound, and you don't know his/her date of birth, make one up and stick to it! Or, if you remember the day you adopted, make it an adopt-a-versary!!
  3. Once you choose the date, mark it on your calender so you won't forget!
  4. Check your address book for friend's addresses - make sure they have a dog. It could be a little pointless to invite people without dogs.
  5. Make invitations. You can order special dog birthday invitations or make your own creative ones. Make sure you make enough to send out to everyone you invited. It is also fun to put dog treats on the cards as a surprise for the invited.
  6. Write in bold letters on your invitation "PLEASE BE RESPONSIBLE ENOUGH TO EXCLUDE YOUR AGGRESSIVE DOG. IF YOUR DOG IS AGGRESSIVE, PLEASE LEAVE HIM HOME, BUT YOU ARE WELCOME TO COME!". This is important if you are inviting a friend over who has a dog but you haven't met the dog yet.
  7. Send out your invitations. Make sure you have your phone number or email on the invitations for RSVP-ing.

Planning the Party/The Place

You should, of course, have a nice, safe and dog friendly place to plan your party. But where?

  1. Consider your yard. If you have a house with a yard, make sure to check fences for stability. Clean your yard out from any junk, and fence off any "doggie no-no" areas.
  2. If you don't have a yard, no problem! You can use your local park, dog park, etc. Just make sure to survey the area and make sure it is safe and doggie friendly. You also might want to contact the owner(s) of the park to ask if you can reserve some space for the day.
  3. If all of your friend's dogs are toilet trained, you could have an indoor party. This is especially useful in the winter.
  4. Consider having your party at the beach! Most dogs absolutely love the beach, and it will be a lot of fun watching dogs bark at the waves! Make sure that animals are allowed at the beach, first!

Activities

Having a birthday party is no fun without activities!

  1. Set up an agility course. You can buy cheap agility starter kits just for fun. The dogs just love them!
  2. Plan tons of games for the dogs to do! You can have a contest for things like "most beautiful dog" or "best party animal". Be creative and THINK THINK THINK!
  3. Make sure to buy tons of toys for the dogs to play with! Just make sure they don't fight over them.

Decorations

Decorating the area will make the party much more fun!

  1. Decorate tables with plastic table cloths that are dog themed.
  2. For food, consider making a dog-friendly birthday cake by finding a recipe online!

Tips

  • Make sure that your dog doesn't fight with any of the guests!
  • Don't invite too many guests or else your party will become over crowded or out of control.
  • Hand out goodie bags full of homemade treats for the dogs and thank you cards for the humans at the end.
  • It might be a good idea to have small treats for the dog guests, maybe homemade, because not all kibble or dog food can be given to both big and small dogs.
  • Make a cake for the humans too, after all they brought their dog(s)!
  • Consider your pets personality - If you pet is shy or slow it might not want other dogs raid it's home. In that case, maybe only invite 1 dog.
  • Have the guests sign a white toy so your dog and you will remember the party.
  • If you feel that you are lacking doggy guests, take a trip to the park to recruit more, but remember, only invite those that your dog gets along with.
  • Make sure to tell your neighbours about the party if they are not already coming. You wouldn't alarm them by all the barking and noise!
  • Make sure to not spend too much, why not make some of your own decorations, or homemade dog treats.
  • Make sure to have snacks for dogs and humans!
  • Are not willing to take care of the cleanup then put down doggy pads.

Things You'll Need

  • A dog
  • A place for the party
  • Gifts (you don't provide the gifts, your guests do!)
  • Cake (for dogs and humans!)(NO CHOCOLATE CAKE OR FUDGE) ONLY WHITE OR YELLOW!!!!
  • Toys (to keep guests entertained)
  • Food (for human guests and for dogs). Don't give the dog anything with onions or chocolate/fudge.Look up a list of foods and things dogs can't have first.
