Throw a Party on a Boat

There are plenty of other things to do on a boat besides swim. A lot of people, even current boaters don't realize that there is so much more to do on a boat than just swim. Throwing a party on a boat is a great way to entertain when the water is cold or you just feel like getting together!

Steps

  1. Pick a Theme - It is good to do this first because the theme might affect the expense of the party and how many people you invite. Some great boat party themes might include: Iron Chef Party, Magic Cruise, Texas Hold'em Party, Karaoke Night, Pirate Party
  2. Make a Guest List - While you may usually think, "The More the Merrier" when you are planning a party, on a boat you need to be cognizant of capacity and local laws and regulations. It is important not to go over the intended capacity for safety reasons. Also, unlike a "landlubber party", you need to make sure you have Personal Flotation Devices (life jackets) for everyone on board.
  3. Send out your Themed Invitations - Depending on how many people you invite and how casual the party is, this can range from a printed invite to a pirate phone call, " Arrgh, you be invited to a party matey" ;)
  4. Shop for Decorations and Food - If you're on a budget, try to re-purpose things already on your boat or in your house. Throw some green felt of a fold out card table for casino or card night, use a boom box for karaoke (do you really want the neighbors to hear you anyway?). If you don't want to break the bank on food, make it a potluck. Your guests will happily oblige if it means a return visit to the boat.
  5. Make a Timeline for Set-Up - If it's a bigger party, you might want to make a timeline for having the boat cleaned, decorations out and food ready, just so you don't get overwhelmed.
  6. Have Fun! You did all the work and preparations, now sit back and enjoy the party.

Tips

  • Be safe. If you are serving alcohol, make sure the boat captain is responsible and knows local rules and regulations.
  • Make a list. Each step becomes infinitely easier if you start out with a list.
