Transfer Rock Band 1 Songs Into Rock Band 2 on Xbox 360

Just picked up Rock Band 2 for the Xbox 360 and want to transfer your songs from Rock Band 1 to your hard drive? This convenient feature eliminates the hassle of swapping game discs when you want to play a certain song from Rock Band 1 while playing Rock Band 2. Other than the 3 out of 58 songs that can't be transferred due to licensing issues, this pretty much makes the Rock Band 2 disc the only one you'll need when you have the urge to rock out on plastic instruments.

Steps

  1. Put the Rock Band 1 game disc into your Xbox 360 and start it up.
  2. If you haven't played it recently (since Rock Band 2 launched 9/14/08), it should show there is a small update to download. This should only take a few seconds and then the game should start up.
  3. Go to Options on the main menu and you should have a new choice, which is Export Songs. Select it.
  4. Once selected you should be prompted to enter a password, which is on a small piece of paper that comes inside the case for Rock Band 2. Enter this password.
  5. Look at the screen. The screen should then show how much the fee for the transfer is (400 Microsoft Points, or $5), if you don't have 400 points or more tied to your account, you'll need to purchase them online with a credit/debit card or enter the code from a store purchased point card.
  6. Select Confirm Download and a file will download, which should only take a few seconds.
  7. Wait. Once this is downloaded, it should begin the transfer process which takes about 10 minutes (and about 1.5GB of space on your hard drive).
  8. When this is complete you can take out Rock Band 1, put in Rock Band 2 and now have access to 55 of the 58 songs from Rock Band 1. Add this to the 84 songs on Rock Band 2 and any downloaded songs you may have, and you have quite a set list.

Tips

  • There is a code in the Rock Band 2 manual you should input at RockBand.com following the included instructions to get a code emailed to you. Use this code on Xbox Live for another 20 songs for free.
  • Additionally, there are five songs on Xbox Live which are free. Still Alive by Glados and Jonathan Coulton, from the game Portal; Charlene (I'm Right Behind You by Stephen and the Colberts; Headphones On by Miranda Cosgrove; Saints of Los Angeles by Motley Crue; and Promised Land by Vesuvius.
  • If you just have Rock Band 2, you can actually just rent Rock Band 1 and do this. After all, you are purchasing a license for those 55 songs.
  • On top of that, if you bought the Disturbed album Indestructible, a code was included which, when input at the band's website, would generate a code to download, free of charge, two songs from that album into Rock Band: Inside the Fire and the title track, Indestructible. However, the record label mistakenly put the same code in each copy of the album, the code circulated online, and anybody could use it, however, they had to input the code at the Disturbed site to generate a unique Microsoft code. To this date, no one has reported Disturbed or Microsoft or anybody rescinding fraudulently-acquired Disturbed songs.
  • If you have the AC/DC Track Pack or the Track Pack 2 discs, you can export those songs as well by inputting a code from their booklets, following the accompanying instructions. The same will work for the forthcoming Classic Rock track pack.

Warnings

  • Three songs will not be transferred. These songs are Enter Sandman by Metallica, Paranoid by Black Sabbath, and Run to the Hills by Iron Maiden
