- Put water in a pan and bring to a rapid boil. The more water the longer it will last at a boil, so, put enough in for 8 minutes. Usually, about {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} of water from bottom of pan. While water is coming to a boil, wash your hands, use clean tissues to wrap your fingers, and pop all your zits. Yes, pop them. For further understanding for this madness, read in the 'tips'.
- When water is at a rapid boil place a clean towel on your head and bend over the steam. DO NOT BURN YOURSELF. Starts about three feet away and slowly get closer. Remember to take deep breaths while you do so because the steam can HURT the back of your throat. Once you get in a comfortable distance, stand bent over the water for 8 minutes. By the time you are down to the last 1 1/2 min. there should be drops of water falling from your face. On average, 5-7 drops total.
- Go to a mirror and look at your face. Your problem areas will be showing extremely well. Take your clean towel and pat your face dry. The key is to pat! Rubbing irritates the skin.
- Apply a small amount of Johnson's Baby Oil by Johnson+Johnson to a cotton ball. The amount being poured on the cotton ball should equal a dime-quarter. Dab the cotton ball on problem areas (as not to over use the product in one area) then use the cotton ball to spread over entire face. No matter the skin type. Keep watching your skin. The Johnson Baby Oil will make your problem areas stand out even more. Not just acne, but also dry skin.
- Wash hands. To make sure most germs and oil are either killed or gone sing your ABC's. It should take about 20 sec. which is the amount of time it takes for germs to die.
- Take a moisturizer, stay away from oil-free as they are not good for skin (Yes, I am calling the bluff), and squeeze a dime-size amount on hand. Now, take a finger from the other hand and place in your new dime-size amount of moisturizer. Take the finger and dab the moisturizer on problem areas only. You should end up with, around, 15-30 dots of moisturizer on your face. Smooth out the moisturizer over entire face. This keeps more moisturizer on the problem areas and less on your real skin, making your skin more even in the long run.Don't use face moisturizers with sunscreen mixed in. Sunscreen can increase acne aggression. So use moisturizers with natural and vitamin rich ingredients. Cetaphil is a great product to use, unscented would be best.
- Repeat once every week and increase amount to 2 days a week. Until you skin is clear. Then you can determine for yourself how often you choose to do it. Clear skin is easy to maintain and if you over clean skin then it'll lead to damages.
- Congrats! You are done. Please read the 'tips' and 'warnings' sections for safety reasons!
Tips
- SMALL AMOUNTS! Over using products, oil/acne cream/moisturizer/sunblock/etc, will lead to build-up. This will clog your pores and make your skin unhealthy. Even if you wash your face everyday, the build-up can still be clinging to your face for days, and sometimes weeks! Good news for you! The steaming of the face will get rid of build up, so you don't have to worry about it!
- Remember to protect your skin from the sun.
- WASH HANDS! 67% of acne comes from your finger tips! Not touching your face, washing them if you must, will lead to dramatic reduction in acne. Easier said then done!
- Taking deep breaths, at least to begin with, will help you adjust to the hot temp. Also, the warmth will heal your throat and relax your vocal cords. This means, you will get sick less often and, over time, your voice will sound fuller and healthier.
- More info on this process. Steaming your face will let the outer layers of your skin be moist. Water drys out your skin, but steam moisturizes. I don't know the science behind it, but it works. Steam, the first moisturizer, will be the most effective in this process. The Baby Oil doesn't really moisturize your skin. Oil repels water. The steam in your pores has cooled by the time you apply the Baby Oil which means it is water. The oil will keep the water inside your pores and in your skin by acting as a barrier. The moisturizers is placed on top of the Baby Oil. Why it helps? I suppose that's because moisturizers are emulsions of oil in water, so the water and the baby oil are combined (instead of forming separate layers). I just observed that my skin will stay clearer longer when I apply moisturizer on top of the Baby Oil.
- Why look in the mirror during this process? It's a must for any type of treatment you use. Watch what is happening, when you can get to a mirror, so you see how your face is reacting. Understanding a process will help you to change it to fit your needs.
- Don't apply too much product or it will take your skin a long time to absorb and your skin will look very greasy.
- Don't pop zits - Most treatments tell you not to pop your 'whiteheads'. This is true for their treatments. The reason? Popping your zits causes the pore to be reopened. When you bend over the water, the steam rises up onto your face and into the pores. If you have a closed pore, then the steam won't be as helpful. A closed pore will heat up and some bacteria will die. An open pore, the oil, which includes the bacteria, will heat up. This causes it to die and drop out of the pore. Its such a small amount that you can't see it, but it has a major impact.
Warnings
- Do not use steam on your face if you have broken blood vessels in your facial area. It will aggravate the condition severely. If you suffer from it and your skin needs clearing, contact a dermatologist and ask what safe measures you can use to clear it up.
- Stay away from oil-free, SPF 15 moisturizers. Loads of beauty products have these as choices because A) many people think the oil that causes acne is the same as the oil in moisturizer, and B) if you apply a moisturizer with sunblock then it must be good for your skin. Plus, it makes more convenience. Here is a tip, if you can apply everything (sunblock, moisturizer, acne cream, powder, concealer, cover-up... okay, so maybe I am going a little overboard) all in one easy cream then you are doing something wrong in life! Clear skin takes steps.
- Heat. You don't want to burn your face, you want to heat it up. Don't turn your shower on super hot and try doing this process because it won't work. One reason is because you don't want the hot water on your face, you want the hot steam. Second, burning the face will only make matters worse. Burns can lead to ugly discolorations, dry skin, and more acne. Unless you like those things, I suggest to take warm showers. Hot showers damage the skin.
