Uninstall Internet Explorer 8

If you find you're having too many technical issues with Internet Explorer 8, or if you just miss the previous version, you can Uninstall it from your computer. Keep in mind that Internet Explorer 8 is a part of Windows 7, so if you Uninstall it, you'll have to install another browser to be able to get on the Internet. Once Internet Explorer 8 is Uninstalled, your previous version will be restored.

Steps

For Windows 7 Users

  1. Close all open programs running on your computer before Uninstalling Internet Explorer 8.
  2. Click the Start menu in the lower left-hand corner and select "Control Panel."
  3. Select "Programs" from the Control Panel menu, and then " Uninstall a program."
  4. Choose "Turn Windows features on or off" in the Tasks pane.
  5. Un-check the box next to Internet Explorer 8.
  6. Read the pop-up warning message and click "Yes." Your computer will restart to complete the Uninstall procedure.
  7. Confirm that the previous version was restored by opening Internet Explorer and clicking "About Internet Explorer" from the Help menu. The dialogue box should list Internet Explorer version 6 or 7.

For Windows Vista Users

  1. Close all open programs running on your computer before beginning to Uninstall Internet Explorer 8.
  2. Click the Start menu in the lower left-hand corner and select "Control Panel."
  3. Find and double-click the "Programs and Features" icon.
  4. Select "View installed updates" from the Tasks list.
  5. Double-click Windows Internet Explorer 8 from the list.
  6. Read the "Uninstall an update" dialogue box and click "Yes." If prompted, enter the administrator password for your system and click "Continue."
  7. Follow the directions for Uninstalling Internet Explorer 8, and then restart your computer.
  8. Confirm the previous version was restored by opening Internet Explorer and clicking "About Internet Explorer" from the Help menu. The dialogue box should list Internet Explorer version 6 or 7.

For Windows XP Users

  1. Close all open programs running on your computer before beginning the Uninstall procedure.
  2. Click the Start icon on the far left of the taskbar, and then click "Control Panel."
  3. Select "Add or Remove Programs."
  4. Find and click Windows Internet Explorer 8 from the list of currently installed programs. Click "Remove."
  5. Follow the directions for Uninstalling Internet Explorer 8, and then restart your computer.
  6. Confirm the previous version was restored by opening Internet Explorer and clicking "About Internet Explorer" from the Help menu. The dialogue box should list Internet Explorer 6 or 7.

Warnings

  • If you installed Service Pack 3 (SP3) and Internet Explorer 8 is set as not removable, you'll have to Uninstall Service Pack 3 before you can remove Internet Explorer 8.
