Uninstall the Grub Bootloader from a Dual Boot XP System With an XP CD

In many tutorials, it seems necessary to obtain a Windows 98 resource floppy disk in order to do this, but for those who own laptops can follow the alternative method as listed below.

Steps

  1. XP SP2 users should set their Administrative Password before beginning this (Read 'Tips' section bellow for a step-by-step guide)
  2. Format the Linux partitions to create unallocated space, if you haven't already. You can find a walk-through on how to do this under External Links listed below.
  3. Change the BIOS so that your computer boots your CD drive first.
  4. Insert the Windows XP disc and reboot. It may take a few minutes to load.
  5. Select 'Recovery Console' by pressing 'r'.
  6. Select the Windows system to log on to. The default option is '1'.
  7. Press enter to bypass the administrative password prompt.
  8. Type fixboot and press enter.
  9. Type y to confirm choice and press enter.
  10. Type fixmbr and press enter.
  11. Type y to confirm choice and press enter.
  12. Then retype fixboot and press enter.
  13. Type y to confirm choice and press enter.
  14. Type exit and press enter.

Tips

    1. Login with a normal admin rights user account.
  • When you have problems with the admin password, do the following. Seems that from SP2 you need to enter the correct admin password

Warnings

  • Just formatting the Linux partition won't work, you have to uninstall the bootloader (in this case GRUB).
  • Before doing anything with partitions, remember to backup data!
