Upgrade Adobe Flash Player on Linux Mint

Need to update your Flash player in Linux Mint? The method you use to update Flash depends on the web browser that you're using. Adobe has stopped updating all versions of Flash besides Google Chrome, so if you use a different browser, you'll need to take some extra steps.

Steps

Chromium

  1. Open the Terminal. Chromium does not come with Flash Player installed. You will be downloading and installing the Flash Player plugin from Google Chrome, which is now the only supported version of Flash.
  2. Type .sudo apt-get install pepperflashplugin-nonfree and press Enter. You will be prompted for your administrator password. Linux Mint will download and install the plugin for Chromium.
  3. If that didn't work, type .sudo dpkg-reconfigure pepperflashplugin-nonfree. This is an alternative installation command.
  4. Keep Flash updated. Once you've installed Flash for Chromium, it will not update automatically. You will need to run the update command periodically to check for new versions.[1]
    • Type sudo update-pepperflashplugin-nonfree –status and press Enter to check for updates.
    • Type sudo update-pepperflashplugin-nonfree –install and press Enter to download and install any updates.
    • Restart Chromium after installing updates.

Chrome

  1. Keep Google Chrome up to date. Flash is integrated into Google Chrome for Linux, and this is the only officially-supported version of Flash on Linux now. Any updates will automatically be installed when Google Chrome updates.
  2. Open the Chrome browser. Chrome normally updates automatically, but you can force it to check for an update.
  3. Click the Chrome Menu button (☰). Select "About Google Chrome".
  4. Wait for Chrome to update. Chrome will search for and install any available updates. You may be prompted to restart Chrome after the updates are finished.

Firefox

  1. Consider switching to Chromium or Chrome. The Adobe Flash plugin for Firefox is no longer being updated, so if you want access to the latest features, you'll need to switch to Chrome or Chromium. If you need to install the last version of Flash for Firefox, read on.
  2. Open the Terminal.
  3. Type .sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree and press Enter. You will be prompted for your admin password. This will download the latest version of Flash available for Firefox (11.2).
  4. Restart Firefox. Once the plugin is installed, you can restart Firefox. It will recognize the newly installed plugin and be able to run Flash.
