Use Spotify

Looking for a new way to listen to music? Then Spotify might be the right choice for you. Spotify allows you to create your own playlists, listen to unique radio stations, and share music with your friends. With a few easy steps, you can create your own account and begin exploring all the site has to offer!

Steps

How to Download Spotify

  1. Visit the Spotify website. The first thing you must do is register on their site. You will be prompted to sign up using Facebook or an email. Select one to move onto the next step.
    • Signing up using Facebook will allow you to sync your Spotify account with those of your Facebook friends immediately. The only information Spotify will take from your Facebook account is your name and public information, email, and birthday.
    • To sign up using email, select the option and fill in the required information. You will be asked to provide a username and password, your email, your birthday, and gender.
  2. Read the terms and conditions. The next screen you are presented with is Spotify’s current terms and conditions for the site. Although lengthy, it is always good to educate yourself as to what you are registering for. You must select the “agree” or “disagree” button in order to proceed.
  3. Explore the home page. Once you have created your account, you are automatically logged in to your own homepage via their website. From here you can search for new music, listen to spotify radio, create your own playlists, and view others’ playlists.
  4. Upgrade your Spotify account. The version you have just downloaded is free, but there are three different versions. The free account gives you limited hours of listening time per month as well as ads every fifteen minutes.
    • Upgrading to an Unlimited Spotify account costs $4.99 a month and removes all ads from your listening as well as removes the monthly total-listening time limit.
    • Upgrading to a Premium Spotify account costs $9.99 a month, and offers everything that an Unlimited account does. It also allows you to upload your own mp3s to their site, and use your account on every device you own (desktop, tablet, and cell phone) in addition to your laptop.
  5. Download Spotify onto your desktop. This will allow you to open the program without visiting their website every time.
    • On the upper left hand corner of your homepage, click the Spotify icon. This will begin the download.
    • A pop-up will appear asking you to run the program. Do so to complete the the process.
  6. Enjoy your music! After download, a small prompt will appear whenever you open the program asking you to sign in. Then you will be free to listen to music any time your heart desires.[1]

Using Spotify’s Features

  1. Search for music. By going to the search bar in the left side of the screen, you are able to search and select music from nearly any artist. Some musicians, however, do not offer their music via Spotify.
  2. Create playlists. To do this, you can use the search bar to find different artists and songs and then select the button to the right of each title to open a drop down menu. On this menu, you can create a new playlist to add it to, or you can add it to a previously created playlist. You can also use the playlist tool on the left side bar to make new playlists.
  3. Listen to Spotify radio. This is available by selecting the radio button on the left sidebar, and then choosing a genre of music at the bottom of the page. Spotify will then play a “radio station” of songs which you can pause, rewind, or fast-forward through.
  4. Follow and share music. You can share your music with friends via Facebook connected with Spotify. There is also an option to “follow” your favorite bands or artists to listen to music that they are listening to through Spotify.
  5. Discover new music. When you listen to certain artists or radio stations on Spotify, artists or songs similar to what you listen to most are suggested for you. You can help to make these suggestions more personal by "liking" songs that are played on their radio stations. You can also visit the "discover" button on the left dash to see songs that are selected for you or popular in your area.
  6. Use the App Finder. This is found on the left side column, and is where you can download apps that work with spotify to enhance your music experience. Some of these apps help to introduce you to up-and-coming artists, show you popular playlists, and give you music recommendations.
  7. Use the audio preview tool. If you are listening to one song, you can mouse-over another and press play to listen to a brief preview of that song without stopping yours.[2]

Using Spotify on a Mobile Device or Tablet

  1. Download Spotify premium. This is the only version of Spotify that allows you to share music from your laptop account to your mobile phone or tablet for free and wirelessly.
  2. Visit your app store. On an apple product, this will be the iTunes store. For a Droid product visit the play store. Here you can download the Spotify app by following the directions.
  3. Visit Spotify using wireless Internet. You don’t have to have the app downloaded on your phone or tablet to use spotify as long as you are connected to a wi-fi source. This will allow you to visit their website and stream live music from there. [3]

Tips

  • You can use the same Spotify account for multiple devices, but you can only actively listen to music on one of the devices at a time.
  • You can set your user to private in the settings, so that people can’t view your playlists or see what you’re listening to.
  • You can still find friends to share music via spotify without connecting to Facebook; search for their username in the search bar to find them and connect. [2]
