Use a Clutch on a Dirtbike

This is an article about using a clutch on a dirt bike. Dirt-biking can be fun, but on the other hand, hard, and dangerous.

Steps

  1. Go out to an open area.
  2. Start the bike with the kick starter on the right side, beside your right leg.
  3. Always let your bike warm up before riding to prevent damage to your engine.
  4. When ready, pull in the clutch all the way, then on the left side, push down on the shifter to put the bike into first gear.
  5. Gently give the bike gas while letting the clutch out slowly. When you need to shift gears, it is up to you to use the clutch to shift up or down. However not using it will tear up your gears.
  6. To put the bike in neutral when the bike is not on, depending on the bike, shift down until it is in first then lightly click up a gear. If it rolls forward without stopping then it is in neutral. For bikes with only 3 gears neutral is always the lowest gear. To be sure, tap down about 5 or six times.

Tips

  • When you feel the bike start to pull you, let off of the clutch slower and give slightly MORE throttle
  • When riding in the woods or through technical terrain, it is necessary to slip the clutch. This is where you basically bring the clutch back to its engagement point while moving forward so that you can build revs while going over rough terrain. This sometimes helps on hill climbs if you are going too slow and starting to bog the engine.
  • You can also just shift the gear without using the clutch. However, sometimes when you shift from 2nd to 1st it will roll in neutral, so be careful.
  • Let the clutch out very slowly at first, think "{{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} per second"
  • To do a clutch wheelie, give the bike gas, pull the clutch and rev the engine super high then let go of the clutch and off you go!
  • Lean forward when climbing hills.

Warnings

  • Make sure you are wearing protective gear.
  • Check the bike for any problems and also make sure you clean it.
  • Do Not mix synthetic oil and regular oil!
  • Be careful with the gears when you are on a track.
  • Change oil after every ride if you ride for a long time.
