Wear Your Converse

Converse shoes are available in so many colors and cuts that they can go with almost any wardrobe. To wear your converse, try some of the following styles.

Steps

Pairing with pants

  1. Wear Converse with jeans. This is a versatile look with many possible options, such as:
    • Wear your Converse with skinny jeans for a modern look. If you have high-tops, you might even tuck the hems of your jeans inside the tops of your Converse to show off the side patches.
    • Wear them with bootcut jeans for a subtler look. Longer, wider jeans will show only the toe of the Converse.
    • Wear them with old jeans for an old-school grunge look. This is a good option for everyday use.
    • Wear them with flare jeans and a Free People top. This is a "hippy" or free spirit look. Hang loose!
    • Wear them with baggy jeans for a gangster style. To achieve the look popularized by Lil’ Wayne, tuck baggy jeans into red, boot-style Converse, which should be laced no higher than the ankles.
  2. Wear Converse with shorts. There are several ways to do this well:
    • Wear shorts and identically colored socks with your Converse. Wearing red high-tops with medium-length red socks, for example
    • Wear some short jean shorts and converse. High tops are best for this look, but low tops work fine too. Some clever lacing might also add some flair to this simple look (see below)
    • Just make sure your shorts are short enough. It won't look good if they're too long.
  3. Wear your Converse with low-tops with rolled up skinnies for a summery look.
  4. Wear your Converse with any top. Put a nice long, oversized sweater on, and wear long tights that reach the ankles. This look works for either high Converse or low Converse.

Wearing dresses and skirts with Converse

  1. Dresses look very nice with high tops. Just make sure the dress is casual, and not too dressy.
  2. Wear them with a short skirt (with or without colored leggings) for a feminine look. This is a good option for parties or any more occasion when you want to look stylish.
    • Shorts can also be worn in this manner.

Wearing Converse with shorts

  1. Choose a pair of white or grey Converse.
  2. Find a nice pair of shorts. Any color works, as you're teaming them with neutrally colored Converse.
  3. Purchase some comfortable long socks. Don't use soccer socks; use fashionable long socks that reach to mid-thigh or a little lower.
  4. Match it all together. Rock your new style.

Playing with the laces

  1. Try different lacing styles for your Converse.
    • For a sleek look, tie a knot beneath the tongue of each shoe and tuck the lace ends into the shoes to hide them.
    • For a casual look, lace all but the last two lace holes.
    • For a sloppy look, loosen all the laces and leave them untied, tucking the ends in if necessary.
    • For a grungy look, lace high-tops to the top (or near the top), wrap the ends of the laces around your legs, and tie them without bows.
    • For a clean look, remove the laces altogether, sew the tongue halfway up the sides, and turn your Converse into slip-ons.

Tips

  • If you want to clean the white part of your Converse, use Mr. Clean Magic Erasers, which work pretty well on Converse.
  • There is some debate about whether old Converse look good. Many people agree that Converse look good "well loved", but some say they like a nice clean crisp pair. Don't be afraid to wear an old pair of Converse.
  • Purchase arch supports if you're going to be wearing them every day; frequent use can lead to you developing a painful fallen arch.
  • It's always good to have multiple pairs of Converse for variety and so you can have both worn-out and new Converse. Try to have some low tops ad high tops, and some different colors too!
  • Many people like to write on or decorate their Converse with permanent markers. Don't do it unless you're sure you want it to be permanent.
  • Wear Converse that match your outfit. The black Converse look great when wearing a black shirt with the outfit.
  • Some people wear converse with the laces tucked in.
  • There are different ways to wear converse. Pick a way that goes best with your look or outfit.
  • If you want temporary writings or drawings, use washable markers.
  • Buy inserts that have arch support, if you have high arches.
  • Make sure you don't wear your Converse too often or you'll overdo it. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing!

Warnings

  • Don't let other people pressure you into writing or drawing on your Converse. If you don't want to do it, then don't. It is you that is wearing them, not your friends.
  • Be absolutely sure you wish to do this, as it will most likely be permanent!
