What does a tendon sheath protect?

The tendon sheath is a double walled sleeve whose function is to isolate, protect and lubricate the tendon to protect it from pressure or friction.

The space between the double layers of the sheath is filled with a fluid so that these layers slide over each other easily. A tendon is a cord like bundle of connective tissues. It attaches muscles to bones. Some tendons are round, while others are long or flat

One end of the tendon rises from the end of a muscle, while the other end is woven into the bone. The tendons at the ankle and wrist are encased in sheaths at the points where they cross or are in close contact with other structures.
