Winter Proof Your Car

Though summer is ablaze right now, it’s good to remember to prepare for those cold temperatures of winter that can cause a car to not function properly. Necessary maintenance includes checking engine fluids, battery capacity, tire tread and more.

Steps

  1. Make sure you’re using the proper oil for the temperature conditions outside. During the winter, when temperatures dip very low, try switching to a thinner oil to prevent freezing. If you run 10W-30 in the summer, opt for SW-30 in the winter. If you are unsure which oil is right for your car, check the owner’s manual. Also check your engine coolant and adjust to a winter ratio of 60% coolant and 40% water to prevent freezing.
  2. Sometimes battery capacity in the winter is reduced by the cold. Check the battery cables for cracks or breaks that may have occurred and that you don’t have any loose connections. Also check the manufacturer’s date to be sure of the age of your battery and determine when it will lose its charge. If you can, take a voltage reading of the battery. If it’s 12.2 V to 12.4 V it is half charged so you should be careful to maintain a close eye on the battery.
  3. Snow tires are the best thing to invest in for your car in the winter. The right tires with the correct winter tread can help you out of slick situations. Manufacturers even make year-round tires so that you won’t have to keep two sets. Another good precaution for your car in winter is a windshield treatment. Clean off your windshield and select a washer fluid with de-icer but beware that some fluids may be harsh and damage car paint.
  4. To keep from getting frozen out of your car or breaking your car key in the door lock, try the old fashioned trick of warm water. You could even buy glycerine, used for de-icing, from your local automotive shop or hardware store.
  5. It is recommended to have an emergency kit in your car just in case you get stuck out on the cold. Load things in your trunk such as flares, blankets, boots, a radio, engine oil, de-icing washer fluid, coolant, a flashlight, and some fresh water just in case.
