Write a Message on a Cake
Somebody's birthday? Drawing or writing on a cake can make it look much more appealing. Writing messages on cakes is pretty simple, but it can take some practice to get right.
Steps
- Get a cake. It should be the kind with a flat top (called a "sheet cake,") otherwise you won't be able to write on it very effectively. A pan of brownies or bar cookies will work too, just don't cut the brownies until after you've presented them intact with their beautiful decoration!
- Pick a color of frosting that will show up clearly against the kind of cake you have. (You can also cover the cake with some plain white frosting and then write the message on top of that.)
- Get a pastry bag to "pipe" the frosting in a nice thin stream. If you don't want to buy a pastry bag, put the frosting in a small plastic Ziploc baggie and cut a tiny bit off the corner of the bag with scissors.
- Squeeze the pastry bag gently to squirt out the frosting over the cake. You might want to practice a little on a plate before you work on the cake.
- Write your message! It's best to keep it short and simple, and use big letters so the words will be clear. Try writing in cursive.
- Finished.

Tips
- If you want to spell out a message with colored sugar, make a stencil out of stiff paper, put it over the cake, and sprinkle the sugar. When you take the paper away, the message will be there!
- Frosting is easy to find at any supermarket in the baking aisle, but you can also make your own. You'll need powdered sugar, butter, a little bit of liquid (milk, juice or water), a dash of flavoring and food coloring.
- If you're patient, you could also spell out a simple message using chocolate chips, jelly beans or some other edible decoration.
