Add Colored Tips to Platinum Hair Without a Color Cap

Want a new look? It's easy to add a little flair to your hair.

Steps

Select a Color Type

  1. Temporary color generally washes out after one or two shampoos however comes in a large variety of colors.
  2. semi-permanent color does not strip the existing color because it does not contain peroxide. Semi-permanent will usually last 8-12 washes and can only be used to darken not lighten hair color.
  3. Demi-permanent colors have a small amount of peroxide and therefore will give a richer color that can last upwards of 3-6 weeks depending on care.
  4. Permanent color has a high concentration of peroxide and can not only darken but also lighten hair color up to 3-4 shades and will last until it grows out, however it may fade.

The Process

  1. Before coloring your hair be sure to wash it thoroughly. This will help the hair to absorb the color.
  2. Prepare the color by following the instructions exactly as indicated on the packaging. The instructions when followed to the letter will provide you with the best results.
  3. Separate your hair into small spikes making sure they stand straight up and are well separated. Hold them in place using hair clips or bobby pins (kirby grips or hairpins).
  4. Brush the color onto the tips using either a professional hair color brush (looks like a paint brush) or a soft bristled toothbrush. Make sure the color is not too watery and that you do not apply too much to the brush to prevent dripping. Use the hand not holding the brush to hold the hair below the point at which you want to start the color. This is to make it easier to apply to the tips only.
  5. Allow for processing because we are not using a color cap do not cover or touch your hair while you wait for the color to set as you do not want to push the colored sections into the roots. Follow the instructions on the color packaging as to how long the colour should be left in.
  6. Remove the color from your hair leaving the hairpins in place while you rinse. Once the hair is rinsed you can remove the pins and shampoo and condition thoroughly using professional salon shampoo designed for colour preservation. (Note: for temporary color, do not shampoo, simply rinse thoroughly).
