Avoid Being Hit by a Train

In the U.S. someone is hit by a train once every two hours. These crashes are almost completely avoidable. Driving over a Coke can with a car is the same as a train hitting your car.

Highway rail deaths are almost completely preventable if these rules are followed:

Steps

  1. At a railroad crossing, always assume a train is coming and be ready to yield.
  2. Never drive around a lowered gate or go past flashing red lights.
  3. Never race a train to a crossing. Even if you tie, you lose.
  4. Never drive onto a crossing unless there is room to get off the other side. Also, watch for a second train when you cross multiple tracks.
  5. Don’t walk, cycle, or ride on or near railroad tracks. In most countries, it is illegal to walk on train tracks.
  6. Don't play on railroad tracks or near them.
  7. Cross tracks only at designated crossings.
  8. Stay off bridges and out of tunnels.
  9. Finally, if your car stalls on a crossing get out immediately and call the police for help.

Warnings

  • Do not become distracted while driving by using cell phone, texting, etc.
  • Don't have your car's CD player or radio volume so loud that you cannot hear the sound of an approaching train.
