Steps
- Be train aware at all times. Trains can come at anytime during the day or at night. Expect a train at any time. The should be a sound if a train is coming. Be prepared to stop.
- Obey obvious signals that a train is coming. If the gates are going down and the lights are flashing, stop. Wait for the train to go by.
- Keep in one place until you get the all-clear. If the gates stay down, don't proceed. There may be another train coming.
- Do not go across the tracks if the gates are down. That is dangerous and is illegal.
- Never attempt to race the train in a car. You might get stuck on the tracks and not get across in time.
Tips
- Obey signs that say where to cross and where not to cross. Many railway stations post fine signs as well.
Warnings
- Never try to crawl under or step over the space between two train cars. It is unsafe and illegal.
- Do not train surf; this frequently ends in severe injury or death.
- Do not try to drive quickly through a train crossing, you will get hit, and likely die.
