Avoid Boredom when Sick at Home

When you catch a virus, you can't go jogging, you can't ride your bike and every move you make will make you feel even worse. Laying on the sofa or in bed all day might sound fun, but it's actually pretty boring. Thankfully, it's easy to stay entertained when you're sick.

Steps

  1. Watch some TV. If you're going to be chilling in bed or on the sofa, it might be a good idea to turn on the TV. There are loads of things that you can watch. You don't have to stick to one channel either. If TV isn't really your thing, you can always watch a film instead. Some good TV channels are:
    • Disney channel
    • Nickelodeon
    • Nick Jr.
    • Sky Sports
    • BBC
  2. Surf the web! Check out some Youtube videos, search through funny pictures, and enjoy your search time. You can also play some games on the computer.
  3. Read a book. If your head isn't swimming around too much and you can concentrate, you might want to read a book. Unlike TV, books have no noise so they won't give you a headache or make your existing one worse. Try picking a fairly simple book so you won't have to strain your head to understand the story line; you can just enjoy it. It helps if the book is one that you really love too.
  4. Eat something warm. Chances are, you won't really be in mood for a full roast dinner. Even if you are in the mood, you might not be able to keep it down. Instead, try some warm chicken and mushroom soup. If you don't like that flavour, there are many more out there. Remember to only take small sips at a time and don't eat/drink it too fast. This helps ensure that you don't throw your soup back up.
  5. Chat to friends. Nothing makes you feel better than a get well soon text message from one of your friends. In order to get a get well soon message, it helps to get into a conversation with one of your best friends. If you can't text them, you can always message them through MSN, Facebook or pretty much any other social networking site. If you are going to text your friends, you might want to wait until after school so they can text you back.
  6. Take a little walk outside. Fresh air will do you good. Make sure that you don't go far: you never know when you'll need to rush home for something!
  7. Draw whatever you feel like drawing. Doesn't matter if it's any good!
  8. Listen to music. It can make hours fly by! It might be a better idea to choose an album to listen to rather than just individual songs. Albums are usually about an hour long and can help time fly. Try not to listen to something too heavy that will give you a headache.
  9. Paint your nails. Pick a cute color and adore your pretty nails.
  10. If you are congested, take a hot, steamy shower or if you have a fever, take a cool bath to reduce your temperature.
  11. Play video games! This can be a good stress reliever as well.
  12. Get some rest. Really, the only way that you can pass time and get better quicker is to get some good quality sleep. It helps your brain to unwind and gives your body a chance to repair itself. You don't have to sleep all day; you can nap for an hour or two as well. Whatever you choose to do, rest is vital when you're ill. Go ahead and curl up into bed now.

Tips

  • Drink plenty of fluids! If you have a fever, try not to eat any solid foods until you are fully recovered. Eat soups and other simple foods.
  • Try to keep the noise to a minimum to prevent a headache.
  • Although you probably want to have fun while you are at home sick, make sure you take at least a short nap.
  • Remember if you are sensitive to smells, to be careful with the nail polish (it smells).
  • Keep the brightness down to prevent headaches and migraines when playing computer games.
  • If you have an earache or are sensitive to certain volumes or sounds, try to keep headphone usage to a minimum.
  • If you want to be alone but you have siblings tell your parents or your sibling(s) to please leave you alone.

Warnings

  • Do not engage in any vigorous activities. Your body will recover more easily if you rest and do light work.
  • If you're still ill after a few days and show no signs of recovery, take a trip to your doctor.
  • Watching TV for too long might make you feel or even be sick.
