Avoid Scams in RuneScape

There are many ways RuneScape players choose to scam or trick other RuneScape players for personal gain. You'll be surprised by how elaborate a scammer's scheme might be. Either way, you must keep an eye out for such dishonest pixel-lovers.

Steps

  1. Take your time to watch the second trade screen closely before accepting. Never be quick to judge, as some people sneakily swap items at the last minute.
  2. Report potential scams. If you spot a player attempting to scam, inform the others around you to ignore the player and report him or her. Help others experience a bad fate before it occurs.
  3. Know what the "true" value of items are when trading. When you trade an item, it shows the value of the item, but you're not limited by a trade limit. You must watch the item price closely to avoid being deceived of fair trade.
  4. Avoid giving any personal information away, especially passwords. Treat your password like a credit card or social security number! Even if it's a relative or friend right next to you, one action may change your account significantly.
  5. Do not ever go to the Wilderness to trade. This act of scamming is called "Luring". Remember, the Wilderness is the only place that is not safe for trading and you are likely to be killed by players. Depending on your level, you may be more or less prone to being killed in the wilderness, so just don't go there.
  6. Avoid viewing any external websites that one advertises. Majority of the advertisers can be found throughout the Grand Exchange and Varrock Bank. The links mentioned might be advertising a RuneScape-like site or YouTube channel. Little does one know, it is a method for people to phish others and get their username and password.

Tips

  • Don't listen to anyone asking to follow them. Most likely, they'll lead you to the Wilderness and kill you. A suggestion is to tell them that you need to go to the bank first and see how they react. Keep an eye out for your surroundings, if you do decide to follow someone else. Be aware of where you are going at all times. If you reach a Wilderness Danger sign, Do not jump the wall. Stop following the person immediately and to safety. You should never go into an area with another player that you know contains hostile and high-leveled creatures such as the Kalphite Queen and ice warriors.
  • Don’t give to people who say statements like "I’ve been hacked", "I just got killed", or "I'm poor and need more items". They're usually lying. It would encourage more begging and scamming to give them items.
  • You may also want to add the player that you are trading with to the friend list so if they log out and you don't remember their name you can always copy it from your friend list.
  • Before agreeing to a trade on the forums, ask the player where the trade is going to take place. Sometimes players offer good items for a low price but want you to meet them in the middle of the Wilderness. If that is the case, you can report them on the Forum Emergencies sticky in the General Forum.
  • If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Don't bother!
