Back Up a Mac Without Time Machine
If you want to backup your mac, don't use time machine because time capsules are expensive. For less than $100, you can back up your computer
Steps
- Buy an external hard drive if you don't have one.
- Connect the hard drive to the computer you are going to backup.
- Go to finder.
- Click Go > Applications.
- Open Automator.
- Click Service and then click choose.
- Click the drop downs so it looks like this. Service receives no input in any application.
- Click Files & Folders.
- Drag Get Specified Finder Items to your workflow.
- Click Add and then select all the folders in your home folder.
- Drag New folder below the previous action.
- Click variables and choose Date & Time.
- Click the pill-shaped icons at the bottom of the window.
- Drag the variable that says Today's date into the blank area.
- Double click on the variable you just added.
- On format, click Custom format...
- Make it look like this (January)-(5)-(1999).
- Double click January and click a number.
- Double click 1999 and click the 2 digit number.
- Click done.
- Drag the variable to the name field.
- In the Where field, click other.
- Locate your hard drive and create or open a backup folder.
- Click run to test.
- Click File > Convert To...
- Click Calendar Alarm and then click Choose.
- Open Calendar.
- Save both files as Backup.
- On the event that appears, double click it.
- Click edit.
- Change repeat to Every day.
- Click done.
Tips
- Buy a big enough hard drive. The recommend minimum for a hard drive is 500 GB
