Be Good at Maple Story

MapleStory is a free, downloadable MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) that currently has over millions of players. With many monsters to fight, quests to complete, friends to make, and lots of places to visit, MapleStory provides a wealth of challenges. What's more, since the game includes cute characters and plenty of scenery, even the youngest gamer can enjoy playing. While training is often long and tedious, it pays off in the long run if you can stick to it, because the higher your level, the more there is to do. Want to become good at MapleStory? All it takes practice and a few helpful tips.

Steps

The Basics

  1. When you first start MapleStory, you are given the option to choose the job you want. The jobs currently available are Explorers, Cygnus Knights and the Resistance. Dual Blades, Cannoneers, all 5 Heroes (Aran, Evan, Mercedes, Phantom and Luminous), the Nova (Kaiser and Angelic Buster), the Sengoku Classes Kanna and Hayato (JMS and KMS only), and Demon Slayers are also available, but are limited time classes. Korean players have access to two classes; Xenon, a Thief/Pirate hybrid and Demon Avenger, a spin-off of the Demon Slayer. Global players have an exclusive class called Jett (bounty hunter). Depending on the job, you'll begin your journey in different places. For example, Resistance members start in Edelstein while Explorers are at Maple Island.
  2. Find a good place to train. A good place has a lot of monsters that are at least 3 - 5 levels below you. If your level is below 10, there will not be any monsters with low enough levels, so just train on snails and mushrooms on Maple Island. Due to the recent patches on the game, new, tougher monsters have shown up on Maple Island. If you want to be a Warrior, you may want to train on them.
  3. Familiarize yourself with your character. It will take some trial and error to discover your character's attack range, jumping height, etc. Once you become familiar with the basics, try to learn more advanced tricks, such as how to dodge a monster that is chasing you by turning around and jumping at the same time.
  4. Customize your controls. You use the mouse and keyboard to navigate MapleStory. While the default keys may be acceptable, you might be able to improve your game by changing them. A good keyboard layout optimizes all of your skills.
    • Movement skills (ex. Flash Jump) should be put at the X key. This is because it's close to ALT, which is the space bar. You don't need the Sit button for MapleStory.
    • Put your main attack skill on the space bar. Also, put other skills you use on the lower part of your keyboard.
  5. Join or start a guild. To start a guild you will need 100k mesos, and you'll have to talk to the guild NPC (Non Playable Characters) (found in towns). If you create a guild, you become the guild master or leader. Then you may invite others, etc. You can also pick a logo of sorts, and distribute different titles to members. Membership in a guild helps you make friends, who you can then easily find and contact. Friends can help you with questions you may have or can go on quests with you. Plus, hey, it's good to have friends.
  6. Try doing some quests, as they sometimes give you good, rare items. Even though quests often give you little experience, they are a good break from training all day long.
  7. Understand the Hidden Potential system. Sometimes when a monster drops equipment, the equipment may have a red border. You can go to a store and buy magnifying glasses. Use the glass on the equipment to get the potential. If you don't like the potential, you can use Miracle Cube and change the stats. If you're lucky, your item's potential may upgrade to the next tier. You may get free Miracle cubes from Hot Time or buy them in bulk in the Cash Shop.
  8. Try using Nebulites (GMS). When you train in high leveled places, monsters may drop a box with a gear on it. Go to the USE section and click on the box to reveal the Nebulite. You can go to a town and pay an NPC to drill a hole in your equipment, so you can attach the Nebulite to your equipment.

First Job Advancement/Evan 1st-3rd Growth

  1. Get your First Job Advancement. Each class has a different method of getting their advancements.
    • If you're an Explorer, take the taxi in Lith Harbor to your respective city (ex. Thieves go to Kerning City). Then talk to your respective job advancement leader. If you're a Cannoneer, after you get off the island, go and talk to Kyrin for your 1st job. Dual Bladers also go to the Kerning City and talk to the Dark Lord, but they talk to Syl when they're level 20.
    • For Cygnus Knights, accept a quest and go to a Chief Knight so you can pick your class (ex. Blaze Wizards go to Oz for their 1st Job).
    • Arans just need to click on the giant Pole Arm in Rien.
    • After doing the quests, Evans will start their 1st Growth.
    • Resistance members will receive a letter that will move them to the Resistance Headquarters. Then they talk to Belle (Wild Hunter), Brighton (Battle Mage), or Cheeky (Mechanic). Despite being a Resistance character, Demon Slayers does not follow this method.
    • Mercedes, Demon Slayers, Jett, Luminous, and the Nova Classes automatically get their 1st jobs after the cutscenes.
  2. Do some quests. Quests give a generous amount of EXP in the first levels, but they aren't worth it after you're level 25. Some quest rewards sell for millions of mesos in the Free Market (ex. Subani's Legacy gives 60% Gloves for Attack scroll, which can sell for eight million depending on your server)
  3. Get your job specific hat. At level 18, you should get a message from your job instructor asking you to kill a certain monster. After finishing the quest, you will get a hat that gives 12 of your main stat.
  4. Join a Party Quest when you get to level 20. In any city, go to the Dimensional Mirror, choose a party quest, and ask to join a party. If it is your first time, tell them so they can brief you and give you tips. Party questing is a great way to gain experience fast and is also very fun. Sometimes you may get goodies such as Squishy Shoes, Broken Glasses and other neat stuff! However, you can't do the Henesys (Moon Bunny’s Rice Cake), Kerning City (First Time Together), or the Ludibrium (Dimensional Crack) party quests after level 69!

Second Job Advancement/Evan 3rd-6th Growth/Dual Blade 2nd+-3rd Job

  1. Make your second job advancement at level 30. Each class is different in the advancement, so do some research to find out how to go about it.
  2. Get a profession. You can choose 2 professions and the professions are Mining, Herbalism, Alchemy, Accessory Crafting, and Smithing.
    • Mining and Herbalism are gathering skills. Mining is required for Accessory Crafting and Smithing, while Herbalism is required for Alchemy.
    • Smithing allows you to make weapons, armor, projectiles, and androids. This is a good skill if you're low on funds for weapons and armor.
    • Accessory crafting gives you the ability to make earrings, belts, pendants, and rings. If you're lucky enough, you may get a finished product with Hidden Potential.
    • Alchemy lets you make potions, fuse items, and extract items for item crystals. If you're mainly away from the keyboard, set up an extractor and let people pay you to use it. If you set up a 1 meso extractor, you may get free fame.
  3. Train at Theme Dungeons. The Mushroom Kingdom Theme Dungeon is a great place to train. You also get a glove with 1 weapon attack and 2 magic attack after doing the storyline! Kerning Square is another place to train, you also get a nice medal. At level 55, head over to Chryse. You can get level 70 weapons after defeating the boss.
  4. At level 50, this may be a great time to use those ticket pieces sticking in your inventory and trade them in for Monster Park Tickets. The monsters have more HP, but you get more EXP and Hidden Potential items.

Third Job Advancement/Evan 6th-8th Growth/Dual Blade 3rd+ Job

  1. Make your third job advancement after you reach level 60. You will need to do a quest which requires you to ask questions about Maplestory and get a necklace (name varies by class) to advance to the class depending on the second job you chose.
  2. Training at Jesters is a popular place to train because of the quick spawn and good experience (around 1350 experience per jester). However, don't be surprised by the amount of kill-stealers. It is a very crowded area so don't expect a whole map to yourself.
  3. At level 100-110, train at MP3 (Mysterious Path 3). Just like Jesters, don't expect a whole map to yourself. This is when people start being rude and competitive.
  4. If you have no access to any of those spots, train at the pirates in Herb Town. It isn't competitive because there's a mini dungeon in the map.
  5. The Herb Town and Magatia Party quests are also a great place to train. However, there are some people who will kick their party members so they can train on their own there. Finishing the Magatia Party Quest will either give you Romeo or Juliet's pendant. They both have Hidden Potential and can be combined to make a stronger pendant.

4th Job/Evan 9th-10th Growth

  1. Make your fourth job advancement when you are level 100. This varies by class.
  2. At this time, you can train at the Evolution World. You can use cores to modify the monsters' stats for more experience. However, you can only enter five times a day.
  3. Once you get to 120, you can train at LHC (Lion Heart Castle) in the El Nath area. It is an extremely good training place to get to lvl 200. You can start there at 110, but not a lot of parties will choose you, unless you can do high damage or you're a priest who can cast Holy Symbol. The thing about LHC is that everyone trains in parties so they can get up to 250% more EXP. Add the 50% extra EXP for 375% more EXP. If you try to solo, it will take you forever because the monsters have at least a couple millions of HP, and you only get around 50 thousand EXP per monster.
  4. When you are level 160, you get the ability to go to the Henesys Ruins and Cygnus's Stronghold, which is 25-30 years in the future, and the monsters there are mutated versions of weak monsters and evil versions of Cygnus Knights. Just like LHC, you can train at the Stronghold with party members for more experience. You can join an expedition to go defeat Cygnus when you are level 170. When she dies, she drops level 140 equipment. However, you're better off killing the Chief Knights, because Cygnus is glitched and is impossible to kill.

Completist Way

Once you reach a maximum level (on the majority of the classes, 250), some players will want to Complete the game. If you are one of those players, please read this.

  1. Go for the medals. The medals are easier and, mainly, go for Veteran Hunter. If you already have Veteran Hunter medal, go for Outstanding Citizen or Wonderful Pet Owner.
  2. Complete the Crusader Codex. It is easier to do this when you are a high level.
  3. Go for the stars! Finish all PQ's. (Recommendable that you start doing this at level 20.)
  4. Remember that it's a MMORPG. It can't be completed. Many patches will appear with loads of new content.
  5. Reach a high level with all classes. There are 18 free character slots, the exact amount of classes that actually exist in Maple World.

Tips

  • Check Hidden Street for a list of items that are used for the "Exchange Quest." You may complete the quest as many times as you would like, and you receive 500 experience every time you complete it, along with some items. The monsters that drop the items needed for the quest are levels 33+, so be careful.
  • When you are in a town, check the potion store for return scrolls so you don't have to travel all the way to that town again. Instead, double click the return scroll to be teleported to the respective town.
  • Sleepywood and Basilmarket are some good forum sites for MapleStory but may not be the best for beginners because of the amount of trolls there, but for more advanced questions you can go on there or if you want to search for a boss group, this is also a good place to look.
  • When you talk to non-player characters (NPCs), you can make them instantly finish their talk by clicking the text screen or by holding Enter button to skip the conversation.
  • Search the Internet to find out almost anything about MapleStory, including monster stats, item stats, detailed maps, and much more.
  • During of the release of a class, there may be a Hot Time giving away a hat with bonuses for a specific class (ex. Jett). If you can't afford a Zakum Helmet, try to get that hat for your class.
  • When given free quest items in huge amounts, fame the person if you can. This shows respect and will get you respect and maybe a fame back.
  • Always train on monsters a few levels below or above you. You will have less of a chance of dying and you will gain experience faster because the monsters will be easier to kill.
  • Always fight monsters to get the things they drop. You never know when you will encounter people which want to buy the items from you. Examples include recipes, and rare items.
  • Use character cards to buff up your character. Each class has their own stat bonus and the higher the level, the higher the bonus is.
  • It's OK to die. You will be transported to the nearest town with 50 HP and as much MP as you had when you died. After you make your first job advancement, however, every death will cost you a percentage of your experience (around 10-5% depending on your Ambition level), unless you have a Safety Charm.
  • When you are selling your loot from monsters, sell them at a potion shop so you can stock up on potions and return scrolls. You can also sell equipment with good stats at the Free Market, but it's easier if you have a Store Permit.
  • If you're active and you played for at least 6 months, you may get an invitation to beta test the next updates.
  • Before you sleep, assign your characters some part time jobs. When you return, you just need to talk to an NPC for your payment.
  • If you play in Bera, Broa, Scania, Windia, Zenith, Kradia, or Galician, and would like to take a break from fighting, you can join the Omok Tournament, a tournament where you can play Omok. Currently, you can't sign up for the Summer tournament, but you can wait for a while. This tournament is perfect for Omok players and players who want to meet new friends.
  • Help the newbies giving them loot and sometimes mesos. Everything you do comes back! Maybe they will help you in a PQ in the future, or be your juniors.
  • You can buy and sell items with other Maplers at sites such as BasilMarket. The trades are organized by server. You can also look up items and monsters and price check items you want to sell, and use their forum. However, if you ask a pointless question, you may be trolled. If you're not in the mood to chat about MapleStory in the forums, you can upload pictures and chat in the Off-Topic section.
  • Unless you are a Priest/Bishop and you constantly cast Holy Symbol (gives up to 50% more EXP), never leech off of your party unless the party master or a majority of the party approves of it. Leaching without their permission will get you a mass defame and a boot from the party. This constantly happens in LHC and in the Stronghold.

Warnings

  • Never fall for scams. That 100k in your inventory may be worth being duplicated, but if an offer sounds too good to be true, it is.
  • If you play KMS and you're under 16, there are 2 policies that will prevent you from playing too much. Firstly, there's the Shutdown Law, which will prevent you from playing from 12am - 6am KST (Korea Standard Time). The second policy is the Cooling Off System, which will allow you to play for 2 hours before having to wait for 10 minutes to "cool off", and play for another 2 hours.
  • When trading with another player, beware of overpriced items and check the actual price on BasilMarket, Hidden Street, or the MapleStory section on Reddit.
  • When in a party full of strangers, check every so often to see if a party member is "leeching" experience off of you. They may be just hanging around on a rope while you battle the monsters and give them a lot of experience. A good way of checking is to see if the yellow "You have Gained Experience" text appears at the right, indicating if the other party member is fighting. If you are in a party with more than one other person, this might not always work.
  • You can only do party quests 10 times a day.
  • If you play in Korea or in Global, there is a new policy regarding the drop system to prevent hackers. This means that if you're 20 levels higher than the monster, it won't drop anything except for Crusader Codec cards and ETC items.
  • You may get expelled from a guild or party, so be careful if you are under someone else.
  • Dual Blades, Cannoneers, Heroes, Jett, Nova, Sengoku classes, and Demon Slayers are limited time classes. This means you can only create them at a certain time.
  • Never venture too far into a dungeon unless you are in a party or know you are powerful enough to take on the monsters.
  • You can skip the tutorials and head over to Lith Harbor (Explorers), but it will be hard to reach level 10!
