Be a Bard

A bard is a very important person in literature. He or she is a professional poet. To be a professional poet, you have to be good at poetry and write lots of it. There used to be many Irish bards but now there are bards wherever they want to be, although it is hard to be a bard unless you find a patron to pay for you.

Steps

  1. Get familiar with poetry. Get to know many kinds. Study the structure of famous poems. Learn which sort of poetry you like and would like to write.
  2. Practice. Write poems. Try to get better and better at it. Experiment with styles and word choices.
  3. Write really good poems. They must be good enough that you can read them to other people and have them agree the poems are good (honestly, not just because they are your friends or family.)
  4. It is now important to get them published because you may become famous. If you are famous, you can start asking for money at poetry readings.
  5. You will need to find an agent. Just like authors have agents, you need to have one too. Your agent will help you navigate the complicated world of writing.
  6. Your agent should book lots of readings. Try bookstores too. The more you can present your poetry, the more you will get a feel for what works and what people like to hear.
  7. To be a true bard, you must memorize your poetry and not read it from paper. This impresses the audience a lot more. It also makes delivery a lot more personal (imagine trying to say a love poem to someone while mumbling at the paper in your hand!)
  8. Wear good clothes. Find something that makes you feel comfortable and that expresses your individuality.

Tips

  • A bard would wear laced shoes, long coat or jerkin, trousers. A hood is important.
  • Carry a harp or other instrument.
  • Green, red, white, black and blue are favorite bard colors.
