Steps
- Conditioning is the key. If you don't have a seasoned veteran conditioning coach, they probably don't know what is actually good for you, or overdo the conditioning to the point that you actually lose muscle, or they don't condition you enough.
- Know all of the basics, learn the fundamentals before you move on to the the elite wrestler moves. Many wrestlers have had to pretty much restart all of their knowledge because they tried to learn the sweet moves. Don't just learn the fundamentals, perform them to the point where they become instinctive in match situations.
- Learn the counters to your moves so you can hopefully get out of that position and into a less dangerous situation.
- A stand-up is the most key escape move you can perform. it's good to be able to do a sound stand-up.
- Review all the moves that you know in you head, and get to practice a little early and work on them with your practice partner.
- Never starve yourself. Many wrestlers will go days without eating and end up too weak to participate at practice. After they've gained weight, they simply go out and binge. They will repeat this cycle endlessly. Simply eat smart and avoid foods high in fat.
- Ask for help. If you're not sure about a move, ask for help. Don't let pride get in the way—you'll be happy you asked when it comes time for a match.
- Practice makes perfect. If you practice doing something you get really good at doing it. If you are drilling things in practice you will do those moves in a real match, always try to perform your moves how they should be done in a match.
- Have heart and the urge to win. Believe in yourself and your technique. Go out enthusiastic and leave it all on the line.
- Always be one step in front of your opponents. Always learn new moves so that your opponent will have a hard time countering it.
Tips
- Just because a move works for someone else, this does not mean that it is best suited for you. The move has to work for you and you need to have confidence in it.
- Make sure you are in good shape and that you keep yourself hydrated.
- Some wrestlers try to learn too much in the beginning; quality is always better than quantity.
- Set a reachable goal each week. Some people have high expectations in the beginning, and when these are not accomplished, they get frustrated. It may take three months to get your hand raised for three seconds, but those three seconds are your testament to how hard you have worked. This is a tough sport, never forget that.
- Set a goal weight class each tournament and weigh at your scale at home so you don't have to wrestle extremely heavy guys.
- As they say, practise makes perfect!
- Make sure you have a few moves perfected like a stand up, take down, reversal and pinning combo.
- Some moves are better suited for people of different body types.
- Example: tilts and cradles work better for taller wrestlers. Leg-riding works best for short and muscular wrestlers.
- Attitude and accountability is very important, especially if you lose. Taking accountability and having the right attitude after a loss is key to improvement.
Warnings
- You're going to win some and your going to lose some.
- Do not try something like a suicide cradle in the first period
- Don't be stupid and go out with some buddies and have a beer or smoke a joint, because it truly affects your athletic performance greatly and is not worth getting caught for.
- Wrestle your matches with great intensity, but don't be stupid, if someone is a good neutral wrestler pop them in the face with your palm and get them frustrated and let them take a bad shot.
