Be a Hobo with a Web Based Income

You can be a hobo by choice. With just a few thousand dollars and some determination to get started with, you will be able to prepare yourself for a life on the move without having to barely scrape by.

Steps

  1. Establish a form of earning money that you can do on the go. If you are skilled at writing, programming, graphic design, web design, or any computer application, set up an online firm.
  2. Invest in transportation and camping supplies. You don't want to be the kind of hobo that sleeps in public parks. Use a touring bike and a Hennessey hammock. This will allow you to go all over the nation and sleep wherever you find thick forest.
  3. Buy a laptop. Also, invest in protection for the laptop while a hobo. The laptop is how you will earn money, so you need to treat it well.
  4. Pack up all your stuff and start traveling. Bike for a few hours, and find a heavily forested area and set up camp for the night. After you have started, you have utter control over your schedule. Do you want to go {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} per day, or do you just want to stick around in a town for a while? It's all up to you.
  5. Maintain your internet service while you're on the road. You will be able to find enough libraries and internet cafes to upload the goods to your clients, and get paid through PayPal or directly to your bank account. Keep a debit card so you can get cash.
  6. Wander wherever you like. You should find camping in most wooded areas, and your only responsibilities are earning enough for food (which can be cheap if you try), clothes, vehicle maintenance and emergency savings.

Tips

  • Practice camping, as you might be camping in areas that are not designated campgrounds. You need to learn to be discreet, quick, and cautious so that you never get caught. If you stay very close to civilization, you won't have to worry as much about wildlife. And by picking the right spot, you will be invisible to others.
  • If you have large amounts of money, you may consider a motorcycle. But, this will turn you into more of a biker.
  • Train a lot on your bike before you leave, if that is your chosen method of transportation.
  • Try investing in an RV.
  • Bring friends in the beginning, so that you can get more confident with biking and camping.
  • Buy backup batteries for your laptop to continue working until you can reach civilization.
  • If you make enough money, consider a hotel room once in a while just to shower and rest. You could also shower at many truck stops off highways. Some might consider joining a chain health and fitness club for the use of their showers and bathrooms, an affordable option to hotels.

Warnings

  • Bikes appeal to thieves, so have a sturdy solid bike lock (not a chain one, as these can be cut). When sleeping, secure it to a lamppost or railings in urban areas (but, they might be confiscated) or trees in a forest. If you can't find a place, simply lock the back wheel to the frame and hope for the best. Wear the key around your neck.
  • You may not sleep in a real bed for months, and may only get to shower once weekly.
  • This lifestyle only makes sense in moderate climates such as California where living costs are extremely expensive yet the outdoors are comfortable.
  • This lifestyle is not for everyone, and most end up missing the regular comforts of life.
  • Laptops are also targets of thieves. Sleep with your laptop as close to you as possible, hidden in a bag or pillowcase, something not usually associated with expensive electronics.

Things You'll Need

  • A hammock. Tents also work, but hammocks are lighter, simpler, and more versatile.
  • A bike to get you from place to place.
  • A laptop (and memory stick!!) to keep up your income.
  • The ability to enjoy a nomadic lifestyle.
  • Love of the open road.
