Choose a Bed and Breakfast Inn

Bed and breakfast inns, affectionately known as "B&Bs", are a unique alternative to a traditional hotel in that they offer similar amenities but in a smaller, homey environment. While they typically aren't located in the center of big towns, they can provide a desirable alternative at a fraction of the cost of the Marriott downtown. This article offers instructions on choosing a bed and breakfast inn that meets your needs and budget.

Steps

  1. Determine how close you need to be to your destination. One advantage of most hotels is that they are generally located in or near the heart of a city; while this is convenient for location, being in the center of town typically means dealing with traffic, crowds, and disruptive noises. B&Bs are often located within reasonable walking or driving distance to a city center, but far enough away that the surrounding area is quiet and not as congested. A B&B stay is also highlighted by easy walking accessibility to nearby shops, restaurants, and watering holes.
  2. Decide whether to stay at an inn or cottage. If the B&B offers individual cottages, that will afford you slightly more privacy than just an inn which may contain up to 10 different rooms. No need to have another noisy guest keep you up all night if you have a cottage as an option. However, if you're in a room as part of the inn, you'll get to know fellow guests and the innkeepers more easily.
  3. Consider the décor. The quality of the furniture, sheets, bathroom, and room should be high on your checklist. Make sure the innkeeper(s) regularly maintain the décor of the inn, as it will make your stay much more pleasant. A dingy, outdated room is no excuse for what should be a more comfortable, intimate stay for you than in a "big-box" hotel.
  4. Do your homework. Read reviews online or contact people who have stayed at the B&B you're considering in the past, to learn about their experience.

Tips

  • Figure out what amenities are important to you, especially if you will spend much of your time at the B&B. If it isn't located reasonably close to a city, then it's likely you chose to stay there primarily based on what the B&B offers.
