Become a Good Basketball Shooter

Basketball was originally created by a Canadian but is now much loved around the world, including Canada and the United States.[1] Shooting is a key skill in basketball and, along with practice, there are some tips to honing your shooting skills so that you can become better at it.

Steps

Setting yourself up for success

  1. Choose a good quality ball. Hold it to see if it feels comfortable in your hands, both for weight and texture. For the purposes of practice, the ball is your choice, so make sure to choose a decent one.
  2. Exercise regularly. Being fit is crucial to your ability to participate successfully in any team sport. Your fitness regime might include walking, running, jogging, gym workouts, lifting weights, swimming, cycling or whatever else keeps you fit in a way that you enjoy and feel good after.
  3. Constantly work on arm strengthening. It will help you a great deal to have good arm strength. This is both a combination of exercise targeted towards strengthening arms and spending time learning which arm movements work best for you when on the court and shooting. Make mental notes of the movements that give you the best propulsion and seek to perfect this through practice.
  4. Find a suitable practice court or area. It needs to be somewhere you can use regularly without interruption for the practice time you've set yourself.
  5. Make plenty of daily time to practice. It is through regular practice, continuous self-testing and self-correction and trying your best that you will become better at shooting and more adept at finding which techniques suit your own style best.

Perfecting the Shots

  1. Practice using good form and follow-through. Start next to the net, then later work some distance shots in.
  2. Bend your knees before taking a shot.
  3. Focus on keeping balanced. Balance is key to proper shooting. Balance yourself well before you shoot the ball.
  4. Keep hold of the ball until it is over your head.
  5. Jump up as your shoot. Use the power in your legs to propel you upward and focus your attention on getting the ball through the net. Turn towards your opposite hand 20 to 90 degrees in order to keep your shooting shoulder, hip, and elbow in line with the basket. This also helps get more power on your shot.
    • When you shoot, try to push far away as you can so you can shoot long range baskets.

Game Conditions

  1. Don't take 3's all the time. Warm up from inside the perimeter.
  2. Shoot 20 jump shots inside the perimeter at game speed. This is the same as shooting during a real game. Then, shoot 20 free throws and repeat five times.
  3. Practice controlling the ball. Go up and down the court running with the ball. Then, when you're done, take a two foot stomp on the ground in the perimeter of the hoop and try to get it in.

Tips

  • A healthy body also includes good nutrition. Eat a balanced diet filled with nutritious foods to fuel your athletic pursuits.
  • Warm up with mid range shots. It helps you get your form right and once you get it down start shooting 3's.

Warnings

  • Don't practice too hard, especially during summer. Practice 1 hour and 30 minutes then take a break.
  • Make sure that there is someone nearby to help you if you injure yourself
