Become a Master Gamer
This a pretty simple how to. It requires dedication to your game, and to becoming a master gamer. It isn't hard but as with any real life game it takes practice.
Contents
Steps
- Realize that just because it is a video game does not mean that it does not take practice to master. As with any game it takes just as much practice. Although, it does take less physical action.
- Choose your game. Your game should be something you will not easily get bored playing. It has to keep you interested. Remember you will be advancing beyond the low levels of the game and that it might take a while to accomplish. Remember, try to choose a game which has online capabilities so you can show off your skills and get better at the game. Online is harder than single player in most cases so you will improve even more online. Games like Call of Duty and Star Wars Battlefront 2 have this.
- Know your controls. If it is a computer game and you are using a keyboard and mouse, know which keys perform which functions. Usually the game manual or help will give you this information. If it is a console game or you are using a control-pad or joystick, know all the buttons and what action they accomplish.
- Beat the single player of the game of your choice. If you can't make it through the single player, chances are you won't last long in multiplayer
- Start at the lowest level. Begin the game on the beginner level. When it becomes too easy move to the next level.
- Adapt your skills. Don't get frustrated if you do poorly at first. Figure out what you are doing wrong and fix it. When you reach the highest level, return to the lowest level and move up to the highest again just to make sure you got it.
- Copy videos of skilled gamers as much as possible. If there are any, they can save a lot of time. Watch how they do each shot, each trick, each area, etc. It may have taken them years to figure out a particular technique, but you can have it right away by watching and copying their videos. And stick with the technique until it becomes second-nature.
- Play through an area or level 20 to 30 times. (in a row, if possible.) This is where the real skill is made. Each time you repeat a level, you get better at it (and your gaming skills in general,) so playing an area 20-30 times in a row is a quick way to learn or figure out those new skills. And even 5 times in a row is better than once.
- Show off your skills. Impress your friends by showing them up in head-to-head or just round play. Also if you're under the age of 17 and you're playing an M rated game, prepare yourself to be the main target of everyone in the game, because you're not supposed to be there.
- Stop and think before you use racial slurs online, as they are getting played out and people get very little rise out of them now.
- Showing loyalty to a game company or franchise (ex. ea sports) whether their product is quality or not, is not a good habit. Base your opinions on individual games, not the company which makes them or just because its in a franchise.
- Find a game that helps develop most of your "Gamer Senses". Some of the Gamer Senses include:
- Reflexive Ability
- Platform Calculation
- Self Control
- Game Knowledge
- Timing
- Self respect for yourself and others during online play
- Take a break. The last thing you want is to be totally obsessed with a game. Also, playing a game too much can lower how well you play it.
- Get yourself introduced to the story. Know the story of game before playing. It will give ideas about game.
- Try to figure out what is happening. Look for what to do in the game. Every game has that and is displayed on the screen while starting a new game (At most times) or in the pause menu some games have it there too.
- Know the level earlier. Get a game guide on Internet or see the level video it will help to know what will be in that level so you play more carefully.
Tips
- To reduce the risk of a heart attack, don't get too worked up when you are defeated.
- If your game offers online play take it. It is a good way to quickly improve your skills as most players online are already masters at the game.
- Always have fun!
- Never ever stand still.
- If you lose a level and feel angry, just remember that it's just a game, you can replay that level later.
- It takes practice to master Platform Calculation. Usually by measuring how high you jump and how far you can go.
- Self Control means how well you can control your character, i.e. on the edge of a cliff. Self Control could also mean your language, but we intend leaning on character control.
- A good game that improves reflexes might be the Mario and Luigi RPG Series, but this is only a suggestion.
- Once again, racial slurs are not okay. Firstly, they could get you kicked (permanently) from online play, and secondly they are very rude and disrespectful to other cultures. Consider how someone else may feel before saying something hurtful or harmful.
- If some of your friends are so called "Masters" of the game, challenge them. You can use them as a marker for improvement.
- If you're worried about running out of lives, keep collecting lives from an easier level until you think you have enough. You should have enough to take on some hard levels.
- During cut-scenes or when maps are loading, get up and do light stretches. It keeps your upper body (especially your neck and shoulders) from getting stiff and sore.
Warnings
- Exploiting glitches is dangerous(unless on a game console without hacking) if you don't know the risks, especially if they involve tapping into codes or messing with level structures. However, shortcuts and cheats are there on purpose, so use these whenever you can. That's why they're there.
- These steps don't work with RPGs because the game progresses as you progress.
- Never play any video game or computer game for too long. Remember to take breaks and do other activities.
- Energy drinks may serve as a temporary solution to more energy which would mean being able to play longer, but it's just a drink. After the energy from the high levels of sugar in the drink have worn off, you'll crash.
- Never use cheats on an MMORPG or an online game. For example, like RuneScape, JaGeX has said many times: "There is NO cheat codes coded into the game, and we won't even think about putting some into the game!"
