Bike Long Journeys

Wanna bike to Scotland from Cardiff? Or Bike from Manchester to France? Maybe you want to join or train for the Olympics or Le Tour De France? Well you've came to the right place

Steps

  1. Make sure your bike is in order. Check over everything mechanical and both tire pressures.
  2. Make sure your bike is set up properly. First of all, the frame should be the right size for you. The most important parts of setting up a bike are correct saddle height, correct handlebar height and width.
  3. Bring supplies.
    • For possible mechanical failures: a complete set of tools, a pump, at least 3 spare inner tubes and 1 length of rim tape that are both the right size. Spare parts such as wheels, brake pads or derailers aren't usually necessary.
    • Food and water. The amount depends a lot on the distance. Just water may suffice for shorter distances of 15 to 20 km.
  4. Make sure you have working lights if there is a possibility of getting caught out in the dark.
  5. Map out your course. Avoid hilly regions (unless thats what you're looking for) or highways if possible.
    • Make sure the ride isn't too long.
  6. Wear proper clothing. A t-shirt, shorts and comfortable shoes are okay for shorter distances in warm weather. Clothing made specifically for cycling is recommended, but not necessary to comfortably ride distances more than 60 to 100 km.
  7. Take a friends or family members with you.
  8. Always have a first aid kit and know local emergency phone numbers just in case.

Tips

  • Proper pacing is of absolute importance, wearing yourself out early on achieves nothing and only makes it harder.
  • Have Fun! Don't forget to eat and drink plenty. If you start getting tired or bored, stand up or do something to change your rhythm.
