Buy Milk

Buying milk may look like the simplest thing in the world but actually there are quite a lot of choices. Many people are unaware of the benefits of each different type of milk and pick up the closest or cheapest but may later be surprised by an odd taste. This article will help you buy milk effectively.

Steps

  1. Go to your nearest/preferred shop that sells milk. A groceries or supermarket is likely to sell milk.
  2. Go to the "refrigerated dairy" section. It is normally quite easy to find but if you are really at a loss then ask a member of staff.
  3. Choose the milk that you want to buy:
    • Organic: Cows in an organic herd have access to a pasture, are only given antibiotics when they are ill, and have not been treated with bovine growth hormone (BGH) to increase milk production. Many organic cows are fed non-GM food. It is argued to be better for you and for the cows. However, it is typically more expensive.
    • Skimmed: Dairy is left so the fat can rise to the top and then it is "skimmed" so the fat can be used to create other dairy products like butter. Generally it has less than 0.5% fat.
    • Semi-Skimmed: the best selling variety of milk according to Wikipedia [6.1.07]. Like skimmed all the fat is removed but then some is returned. It has 1-2% fat.
    • Whole fat: None of the fat is removed, about 3.7% fat. This is advised for young children to get all the energy they need.
    • Soy Milk: Often drank by people who are allergic to regular milk. There have been many claims of benefits and disadvantages to health. It is made from soybeans.
    • UHT Milk: The milk is partially sterilised by using intense heat. This can lead to a different taste but means it lasts much longer.
  4. Choose the particular bottle you want. You need to decide how large the bottle should be and you should look at the price too.
  5. Check the expiration date. This is very important for milk because it doesn't last that long.
  6. Take it to the checkout and pay for it. Carry it home in a bag because it will make your hands cold.
  7. Open the milk container or it is hard to use. Most bottles can be opened by turning a cap. This is the simplest way of accessing the milk. Cutting the bottle in half leads to unnecessary waste.
  8. Pour your milk in a glass, add to tea or use for cooking.

Tips

  • If you remember bring your own bag with you so you can recycle and help the environment.
  • If your worry is cost, try a store brand, it's the same as the lower priced ones but at an even lower price.
  • If you want to be healthy, get organic or all natural. It is costly but healthier.
  • Alternatively you can enquire after your local milkman. Don't forget to bring in the milk on the day it's delivered to put in your fridge and cancel the milk when you go away.
  • You can easily test to see if milk is off by smelling it, however the expiration date is normally easily visible. Often it is on the lid.

Warnings

  • If the milk has passed its expiration date then do not buy it. Report the expired milk to management.
