Care for Curly American Girl Doll Hair

American Girl Dolls with curly hair are fun to play with. Yet, they're not much fun when their hair doesn't look nice. So, if you follow these steps, you'll learn how to tidy the hair and even fixed it if it has been damaged.

Steps

Standard tidying

  1. Cover your doll's body. The styling cape that American Girl offers works great! But if you don't have that, a hand towel will do.
  2. Grab a washcloth to cover the doll's face with. If water gets in their eyes, the eyeballs may rust and fall out.
  3. Tell your doll not to worry, this won't hurt a bit.
  4. Take anything that's in the doll's hair out. This includes bobby pins, barrettes, elastics, etc.
  5. Spray the doll's hair with a spray bottle filled with water. If you don't have one, a spray bottle that once had product in it will be fine. But make sure to wash it out with soap and water! The hair should be pretty wet, but not dripping.
  6. Only brush out the doll's hair very gently. You should use a metal pick when the hair is wet. Make sure not to yank! Use your fingers to separate the curls starting at the bottom and working your way up to the top. You should never brush it out when dry, or the curls will frizz and will be harder to go back in.
  7. Divide the hair into sections. Take the bottom part of their hair and put it aside. Take the rest and pin it up on top of the doll's head with a claw clip.
  8. Take small sections of hair and begin to finger curl. If the curls don't look right, curl it the other way.
  9. Once you are done with that section, pull down another section. Keep doing this until the whole head is curled!
  10. Wait for it to dry. An hour or so will do.
  11. Or, if you wanted to, you could curl her hair using your brush! Just take the brush handle, slide it to the end of her hair, and roll up. Leave it in for a couple of seconds. Either a pretty curl or tight ringlet will be the result. Don't worry if you don't like it. You can always finger comb it out and redo your curl.

Fixing damaged American Girl doll hair

  1. Get a spray bottle, soap, olive oil, and a doll brush.
  2. Fill the spray bottle 1/3 of the way full of water.
  3. Put 3 teaspoons of olive oil in the spray bottle.
  4. Fill the rest of the spray bottle with soap.
  5. Put the cap on the spray bottle.
  6. Start spraying the mixture on the dolls hair while brushing. Let dry for about 15 minutes.
  7. Check the hair after drying. It should be back to good condition, glistening and tidy.
  8. Repeat once every month if necessary. If the curls still aren't looking their best, do some standard tidying after you do this method.

Warnings

  • Don't ever get water in the doll's eyes.
  • Don't do anything with the doll's hair while it is soaking wet, such as put it in a braid or a ponytail. It might ruin the curls.
  • Be careful that you don't tug on the doll's hair.
  • If your doll has extremely curly hair, use a your fingers instead of a pick.
  • Use a sparkly hair pick for your doll's curly hair. Using a brush can make the hair frizzy.
