Make a Room for Your American Girl Doll

If you've decided it's time to make a room for your American Girl doll, you might be looking for inspiration. You could place her inside a traditional doll house, or you could get really creative and make your own.

Steps

Making a Basic Room

  1. Find a corner anywhere in your house that you will be able to store your doll's new room in.
  2. Make a room under your desk or in a drawer.
    • If you have some empty cabinets in your room, they can make a good room space.
  3. Use the inside of a grocery box to make a whole room.
  4. Cover the box in wrapping paper or other nice paper.
  5. Cut out little windows and glue on fabric for curtains.
  6. Add a rug or carpet (felt sheet or scrap fabric is ideal). Add some pictures to the wall and add furniture as needed.

Making a Whole House

  1. Choose a corner in your room.
  2. Get furniture for your doll. Choose things like beds, closets, and desks, anything you would find in a house.
  3. Set it up as you like. This will be similar to a one-room house or apartment, since it has everything your doll needs in it.
  4. Add accessories. Put small things into the room, such as pictures, lights, stereos, and laptops.
  5. Place your dolls in your room. See how they like it, and change a few things if needed.

Making a Living Room

  1. Make a couch by gluing some material onto a shoe box and making some cushions out of material and cotton wool. Or you can use a long rectangular or long square pillow and half fold it and there is your couch.
    • You can also place stuffing of some sort (grass, hay, newspaper, fabric) on a rectangle of material and sew another rectangle over it. This would work well for cushions, beds, chairs, or couches.
    • Another alternative for a couch is to use a small basket. Either turn it upside down or fill it with stuffing and a handkerchief or scrap fabric piece to cover the filling.
  2. Make a TV. A television can be made by sticking a picture from a magazine onto cardstock and then drawing buttons around the edge. You can make a remote control with some more cardstock and a felt tip pen. Or you can get some cardboard cut it out of the shape of your remote. Look in any magazine and try to find a picture of a remote, Cut it out and glue it onto your cardboard.
  3. Decorate the living room with accessories. You can make shelves out of wood or just plain cardboard. Fill your shelves with items like photos, books or anything you like. You could even add a little coffee table made out of upturned basket or box.

Making a Kitchen

  1. Make a fridge by finding a shoe box (Converse boxes are perfect!) and taping white paper on the box to fit it. Make fridge handles by taping chenille stems or drawing them. Draw things like magnets to decorate. There's your fridge! To make the table, get a cup and put a big book over the top of it. Get a pillowcase and fold it to make a tablecloth. The counter is the same - but tuck the pillowcase under the book and tape it.
  2. For a stove, get a pop tart box, and cut a three sided square from the middle, with the fourth side still attached. This will allow it to open and close. Next, spray paint,or cover the box in duct tape. Add a small rectangular piece of cardboard to the back. On top of the stove/oven, cut out 4 circles from black paper. Glue these on for burners. For the handle, get a wire and glue a bead on each end of it and glue to the door of the oven. Nicely done!

Making a Bathroom

  1. Make a sink. Get a skinny rectangular box such as a box that a watch comes in. Glue a piece of paper on top to cover it neatly. Use beads for handles.
  2. Make the shower. Use the box that your doll comes in. Cover the inside with construction paper and use a bottle top attached to a pipe cleaner for the shower. Taps can be made from bits of plastic or buttons.
  3. Make a toilet. Use the lid off a spray can. Attach a paper toilet seat lid to the top of it.

Making a Bed

  1. Make a bed for your doll. Make sure that it can hold your doll and that it's a sturdy bed for your doll. There are various methods that you can choose from. For example:
    • Use the classic option of using your doll box to make the bed.
    • Line a shoebox with bedding and place inside this for a bed.
    • Make a bed using wood pieces glued together. Ask a parent or other responsible adult to cut balsa wood pieces to size for the bed and to show you how to glue them all together.
    • Use a hobby kit. Some toy stores and doll stores might have kit beds you can put together following the instructions.
    • Simply pile soft items on the floor of the house you're making, so that it looks like a bed. Handkerchiefs, pieces of material and small blankets can work to make a simple bed.
  2. Find some blankets/bedding for your doll. Many things can work or function as bedding. Such as plain or decorative pillow cases. The plain one can work as sheets. And the decorative one can work as a quilt. A small colorful washcloth and foam insert can work as a pillow. You can also use small things from other brands such as "Barbie or "Groovy Girls" for pillows and blankets.
  3. Use the cabinet space for a bed. Figure out if you want the top shelf or bottom shelf for her bed. When you decide, fold a towel to fit the shelf for a mattress. Then get a bandanna and set over the towel for a blanket. Last get some small pillows.
    • For the shelf you didn't use for her bed, make it into a storage place. Get a shoebox for her clothes trunk and put her clothes in there. For the rest decorate it the way your doll wants it.

Adding Accessories

  1. Find little knick knacks and toys around your house to work as toys for your doll. You can also find doll sized toys from McDonald's or Burger King. Or, you can order them right from American Girl.
