Raise an Amazing Pokémon

Have you ever had your Pokémon be utterly destroyed by someone else's, even though they are the same level, species, and even have the same attacks? You can learn how they raised it and do it yourself if you read on!

Steps

  1. Get a Pokémon, preferably by breeding. Choose which one you want based on what you want it to do; you can have a sweeper, a Pokémon trained for speed and power, or a wall, one made for taking attacks and healing from them, or just about anything else.
  2. Check its nature.' The nature should promote the Pokémon's role in your party. Every nature either doesn't affect anything or raises one stat by 10% and lower another by 10%. A sweeper specializing in special attacks can afford to have its attack stat lowered, while its speed or special attack is raised.
  3. Check your Pokémon's individual values, or IVs. IVs are random bonuses to a stat that range from 0 to 31 for each one. IVs are unique to every Pokémon, so no two have the same values. To check any stat but hit points, use the following formula:
    • ([ceil{Stat / Nature} - 5] * 100 / Level) - 2 * Pokémon's base stat - int(EV / 4)
    • To check hit points, use this formula: ([HP - Level - 10] * 100 / Level) - 2 * Pokémon's base HP - int(EV / 4)
  4. Start training if you're satisfied with your Pokémon's nature and IVs. However, don't just battle any Pokémon; to make a nearly perfect Pokémon, you must battle specific Pokémon that give you appropriate effort values, or EVs. When you get four EVs of the same kind, you gain an extra stat point. You can have a maximum of 510 EVs per Pokémon, but only 255 per stat.
  5. Keep training. Battle any Pokémon that gives a lot of experience to reach level 100 quickly after you're done EV training. When you're finished, you should be able to crush almost every other Pokémon easily.
  6. Love it. Keep the Pokémon you want to raise always in the number one position and if you have Pokémon Heart Gold or Soul Silver, talk to them often and give them as much attention as you can.

Tips

  • The Macho Brace item and Pokérus both double the EVs you receive, and when used together your EVs are quadrupled after every battle!
  • Use a paper or spreadsheet program to keep track of your EVs after every battle.
  • If you're having trouble quickly getting to level 100, then use these tips:
    • Traded Pokémon get 1.5 times as much experience than personally caught Pokémon. If possible, trade your Pokémon to another game and level it up there, and then trade it back to your original game.
    • When held, the Lucky Egg item doubles the experience points a Pokémon receives. While valuable, it's very rare: unless you're playing Black or White, in which you're given one before the sixth gym, you must catch a wild Chansey and it may be holding an item called a "Lucky Egg".
    • A lot of places give decent experience, but the Elite Four is usually the best place to get Experience Points.
    • Use the EXP. Share with a low-level Pokémon to quickly raise its level until it can fight on its own.
    • Use every/the type of Pokémon suited for defeating the player you are trying to defeat.
  • Bred Pokémon tend to have better IVs than their wild counterparts.
  • Pokémon tend to give EVs in the area their own base stats excel in, but sometimes they give multiple types of EVs. There are several lists of which EVs what Pokémon gives online.
  • The EXP. Share item also shares EVs gained by the lead Pokémon, but it doesn't take into account Pokérus.
  • If you're new to EV training, try training attackers first; they usually take 252 Speed EVs and 252 in whatever offense. Some Pokémon take EVs in 5 stats, so don't try those unless you're really good at keeping track of EVs.

Warnings

  • This is a long, complicated and tiring procedure. Only proceed if you'd go to extremes to beat everyone else.
  • STAB and weakness/resistance management should be accounted for. The perfect Gyarados will still usually faint in one hit from a Thunderbolt from a Raichu.
  • Moves can make or break a Pokémon. While you're leveling up, remember to get moves that fit your Pokémon's role.
  • Be sure to train on the correct Pokémon, or your EVs will be ruined!
