Change the Background Color in Adobe Illustrator

Learn how to change the background color or canvas color of any graphic file on your Adobe Illustrator and be able check the appearance of a graphic on a colored background to enable you to see what it will look like when printed onto colored paper. It's just a few easy steps, and we'll show you how.

Steps

  1. Start by opening any graphic file. For this tutorial we're using a screwdriver.
  2. Hide Artboards. Go to the View menu, then select Hide Artboards. Alternately, you can use the shortcut Shift + Command + H (PC: Shift + Ctrl + H).
  3. Edit the Document Setup. From the File menu, choose Document Setup... or press Option+Command+P(PC: Ctrl + Alt + P).
  4. Edit the top grid color. In the resulting Document Setup dialog, set the top grid color as desired.
    • After choosing the colors, enable the Simulate Colored Paper checkbox, then click OK.
  5. You now have changed the background color of your graphic file.
