Change the Oil on a 2006 to 2013 BMW (E91,E92,E93)

This post will describe in full detail as to how you can change the oil and oil filter in a 2006 to 2013 BMW 3-series (E91, E92, and E93). Keep your car maintained, add the best qualifying oil that BMW approves of, you can always check this by going to your own car manual (BMW Self Manual).

Steps

Jacking up the Vehicle

  1. Place the car on an even surface for a better working area. The four solid rubber jacking pads found in the BMW E90 models are located slightly in front of the rear wheels but slightly behind the front wheels. The position of the rear jacking pad in reference to the wheel is clearly shown on the picture. The function of the jacking pads is to support the car from the bottom using either an hydraulic or a hoist, for instance, when replacing the tire in an emergency scenario. When working on a raised vehicle like in this situation, a jack serves the purpose of supporting the vehicle. It is important to replace a missing jack to avoid damaging its body. The jacking is snapped into its place after pushing it when fixing the missing pad on E90 models. The wheels which are not jacked are held by the wheel chocks that prevent the vehicle from rolling. Assuming that parking brakes will prevent the vehicle from rolling may have dire consequences.
  2. Lift the vehicle using a hydraulic floor jack. The hydraulic floor jack should be place beneath the steel box, at the front of the car.
  3. Keep a close eye while lifting the vehicle. While raising the vehicle to ensure that the jack’s lifting pad is aligned with the vehicle’s jacking point.
  4. Lower the vehicle until you feel it is at an evenly height. The jack is installed at its pad position after attaining the desired height to support the vehicle. A second jack stand can be added beneath the steel section of the body if the jack stands are either moving or tilting when lowering the vehicle.
  5. Place the jack underneath the car where there are jack pads. Enough room for jacking and supporting the vehicle in the jack pad simultaneously is not available. The hydraulic floor jack is placed at the differential rear when using hydraulic system to lift the vehicle’s rear. Placing the jack under the stands of the jack is helpful when lifting the vehicle from the center.
  6. Lower the vehicle making sure it is perfectly positioned. For additional support, the jack can be left under the rear differential area. Ensure that the jack stands are not tilting or moving during the process. The jack stands should be raised and jack beneath the vehicle removed when slowly lowering the vehicle to the ground. Ensure that all tools are perfectly position before lowering the vehicle.

Draining the oil

  1. Loosen the lid to begin the oil drainage. Loosen the oil filter housing on a 6” oil filter socket extension until you can see the sealing of the O-shaped ring. This helps to drain the oil into the oil pan. Approximately 1-liter of old engine oil is left behind if the oil filter is not properly drained.
  2. Using a flathead in order to access oil drain. The access door opens when the lock is rotated for 180 degrees. In addition, opening the door can create enough room for working.
  3. Locate oil drain plug. It is positioned slightly above the center of the drain pan.
  4. Remove oil drain plug. Using a 17mm socket and then the engine is allowed to drain till there is no more dripping. Closely monitor the dripping oil because there is a possibility that the streaming oil will miss the drainage pan. A new sealing washer and torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lb)is positioned on the drain plug. Remove the drain pan beneath the car after closing the access door to the oil drain plug.

Adding the oil

  1. Remove engine’s oil filter cover. Remove old filter cover.
  2. Remove O-shaped rings. Use a small flathead screwdriver.
  3. Remove and replace. The O-shaped ring and the filter, however, push the filter as deeply as possible. The cover of torque oil filter is around 25 Nm. Fill the engine oil to its maximum capacity i.e. 6.5 liters(7 US quarts).
  4. Check for oil indicators on vehicle when starting engine. Confirm if there is any oil leakage when lowering vehicle on the jack stands. The oil level is indicated on the dashboard’s information center. The owner’s manual contains vital information such as specification of how and when the oil level should be checked.

Tips

  • Change oil on-time to prevent not damaging the engine and save you thousands of dollars down the road.(Refer to BMW owner's manual).
  • Make sure to work with a slightly warm engine before starting to change the oil.( No more then 5 mins)
  • Always block vehicle wheels before jacking it up to prevent it from rolling.
  • While working beneath your vehicle, make sure to use a jack stand.
  • Always place the car on park and engage the break before jacking the car up.

Warnings

  • Make sure no part of the jack touches the rear differential cover.
  • Do NOT keep the car running when changing the oil. This prevents it from not damaging the engine.
  • Keep an eye on the oil level.
