Coin Stack a Penny Bridge

Coin stacking can be a fun hobby for everyone. Break open the penny jar and make your coin stacking masterpiece! There's not much you can buy with a penny these days, but you sure could make a great penny bridge.

Steps

  1. Make a stack of 10 pennies. Put your palm around them, to make sure that they are stacked evenly on top of each other.
  2. Create a triad and carefully place it on top of the stack of ten pennies.
  3. Place another triad on top of the previous triad. Continue adding triads until you get the height you want.
  4. Repeat the above to build another bridge foundation, placing it close to the first foundation.
  5. Connect the bridge by adding a penny at a time, on each end, leading up to center following the picture as a guide.
  6. Expand on the bridge by starting over and putting an extra triad on top of each stack. This technique will create a bridge the width of 2 pennies, as seen in the photo.
  7. Expand again to a 3 penny wide bridge. To do the penny bridge with a width of 3 pennies, do the same thing that you did for the 2 penny wide, except you put 3 pennies in the middle. With making the bridges with a larger span, put as many triads as there are pennies wide. Next, just fill up all the "spaces" between the triads, and keep going.
  8. Finished.

Tips

  • If you go past 3 up on the first set of coins extending out you will need to add lots of coins to the top.
  • All stacks of coins were done without any glue. Only the weight of the coins provides the support.
  • Work on this on an out of the way table that no one uses as you might need to return a few times to complete it.
  • Try again and again, as this is painstaking work.
  • Try to obtain new pennies from the bank, so the bridge will be really shiny and bright. Alternatively take your dirty pennies and clean them.
  • For some variety, alternate pennies in the stack, one being new and shiny, with an older one, dirty and dark. Also, create your own design by alternating the top of the bridge for an interesting effect.
  • Once you succeed with the above you can build bridges together to create fantastic structures.

Warnings

  • Slowly add each penny, cupping it with your hand, to make sure it is straight and will not lean over or collapse.
