Separate Canadian Coins from American Coins
Ever have a big box of coins that you want to use, but it has both Canadian and American currency mixed in it? This guide will show you an easy way to separate them.
Steps
- Over a flat area like a table, dump the coins. Flatten the coin-pile out so that there are no more than 2-3 coins stacked on top of each-other.
- Take a magnet and slowly pass it above all the coins.
- Almost all of the Canadian coins will stick to the magnet, but the American ones will not.
- Continue this process until no more coins stick to magnet. Then look over the coins just to make sure you didn't have any silver or copper coins in a pile.
Warnings
- This will not work for Canadian dimes and quarters prior to the late 60's as they used to be silver.
- Only some modern Canadian pennies are magnetic, so you will have to sort the US pennies from Canadian pennies. These Canadian pennies will have to be brought to a bank as pennies are no longer used in Canada.
- This will not work for all Canadian nickels dated 1982-1998, and some from 1999-2001, and 2006.
Things You'll Need
- Mix of Canadian/American coins.
- Medium-to-high power magnet, most fridge magnets WILL NOT DO.
