Completely Disable Google Chrome Update

Disabling automatic updates in Chrome will prevent the browser from downloading and installing updates without your permission. To completely disable Google Chrome Update in Windows, you'll need to use the Registry Editor to prevent updates. On a Mac, you'll need to use the Terminal application. For mobile devices, you can disable automatic updates for the Chrome app.

Steps

Mac

  1. Open the Terminal in your Utilities folder. From the desktop, click the Go menu and select "Utilities." Open Terminal from this folder.
    • You can also press ⌘ Command+⇧ Shift+U on any Finder window or the desktop to open the Applications folder.
  2. Enter the command to disable automatic updates for Google products. Enter the following command and hit ⏎ Return. This will disable automatic update checks for all Google products:
    • defaults write com.google.Keystone.Agent checkInterval 0
  3. Restart Chrome if it is open. Your changes will be applied, and Chrome will no longer check for updates.
  4. Check for updates manually. Regularly updating Chrome will help keep your computer secure. You can check for updates by opening the Chrome menu and selecting "Help" → "About Google Chrome."[1]
    • You can switch back to automatic updates by opening Terminal again and using the same command, replacing 0 with the interval between update checks in seconds. For example, to check for updates every 24 hours (the max), set checkInterval 86400.

Windows

  1. Open the Registry Editor. You'll be making changes to the system registry to prevent Chrome from checking for updates.
    • Press ⊞ Win+R and type regedit to start the Registry Editor.
  2. Expand the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" folder. This will display options for software installed on your computer.
  3. Expand the "SOFTWARE" folder. This will display a list of companies that have programs installed on your computer.
  4. Expand the "Policies" folder. There will likely be just a couple folders here, including Microsoft.
  5. Right-click the "Policies" folder and select "New" → "Key." Name the new key "Google."
  6. Right-click the new "Google" folder and select "New" → "Key." Name the new key "Update."
  7. Right-click in the large frame on the right and select "New" → "DWORD." Name the new DWORD "UpdateDefault."
  8. Double-click the new "UpdateDefault" DWORD. This will open a new window.
  9. Make sure the "Value data" field is set to "0." Click "OK" to save it.[2]
  10. Close the registry editor. Chrome will no longer automatically download and install updates.
  11. Check for updates manually on a regular basis. It is highly recommended that you manually apply updates as they become available to help protect your computer's security. To check for updates, open the Chrome menu and select "Help" → "About Google Chrome." If updates are available, you'll be prompted to install them.
    • You can re-enable automatic updates by going back into the Registry Editor and removing the DWORD you created.

iOS

  1. Open the Settings app on your iOS device. By default, all apps will automatically download and install updates. You'll need to disable this in the Settings app if you don't want Chrome to update on its own. This will disable automatic updates for all of your apps.
  2. Select "iTunes & App Store." This will display the settings for your App Store.
  3. Toggle "Updates" off. This will prevent the App Store from checking for new updates and installing them automatically.
  4. Check for updates on a regular basis. Keeping Chrome up to date can help protect your device. You can check for updates by opening the "Updates" tab in the App Store. and then tapping "Update" next to Google Chrome.[3]

Android

  1. Open the Google Play Store on your Android device. You can disable automatic updates from the Chrome app through the Google Play Store.
  2. Search for Chrome. The quickest way to get to the Chrome app page is to search for it at the top of the store. You can also open the menu, select "My apps," and then scroll through the list to find Chrome.
  3. Tap the ⋮ button in the upper-right corner. You'll find this at the top of Chrome's app page.
  4. Uncheck the "Auto-update" box. This will disable automatic updates for the Chrome app. It is still highly recommended that you regularly check for and install any available updates to help keep your browser secure.

Warnings

  • It is recommended that you keep Chrome up to date. This will help protect your computer from security vulnerabilities of older versions.
