Connect a PlayStation 4 to Speakers

Sony has eliminated analog RCA output options on the PlayStation 4 console. The system is designed to be compatible only with the highest level of audio and video technology. Here's what you need to know when trying to connect a PS4 to your speaker system.

Steps

Connecting through Digital Optical Input

  1. Purchase a digital optical audio cable. Although this input method will deliver the highest quality sound for your PS4, the factory bundle does not come with a cable included. Digital optical input creates a direct connection to the console's digital signals with no adapters or converters, so it is the best way to get high quality audio such as 5.1 surround sound from your PS4 with little or no latency.
  2. Find a speaker system with digital optical inputs. Some computer speakers and many newer stereo receivers have them.
  3. Connect the PS4. Connect your PS4 to the video monitor of your choice.
    • Attach one end of the cable to the digital optical output jack on the back of your PS4.
    • Connect the other end of the cable to the corresponding input jack on your computer speakers or receiver. You now have the optimal PlayStation 4 audio experience.

Converting Digital Optical to Analog RCA

  1. Know that this method can only be used to transmit audio signals. Video does not travel out through the digital optical cable on the PlayStation 4, and the system is not designed to support a video signal at less than 480p.
  2. Buy the converter. Obtain a digital optical coax to analog stereo RCA converter from a trusted retailer.
    • Connect the digital optical cable from the PS4 and the RCA audio jacks to their respective sockets on the converter box.
  3. Choose one of the methods. Use any number of methods described in Connect a PS3 to Computer Speakers to connect your speakers with analog stereo RCA.

Using HDMI for Audio

  1. Use this method when your stereo or other audio devices are connected directly to your HDTV. If your TV has analog RCA inputs, this is another way to convert the digital audio signal to analog RCA.
  2. Connect one end of an HDMI cable to the output panel on your PS4.
  3. Connect the other end to your HDTV.
  4. Experience the audio from your PS4 system through whatever speakers are connected to the television. If your TV does not have external speakers connected to it, the sound will come out of whatever speakers are built in.
