Convert Your Lexus GX 470 Suspension from Air to Coil Springs

Your Lexus GX 470 came equipped with an active air suspension when it was new. While this air suspension rides beautifully, it is made up of a complex system of computers and moving parts. These components wearing out is a matter of "when" and not "if." Instead of spending thousands on endless repairs, many people are simply converting their Lexus' suspension from its original air shocks to simple, sturdy coil springs. These coil shock systems are so simple, they can be installed easily at home. Here's how:

Steps

  1. Find and purchase a conversion kit made specifically for your Lexus. Ensure that the model and year range fit your car. Changes in design over time means that kits that fit earlier models won't work with older ones, and vice versa, depending on the year.
  2. Safely raise the vehicle
    • Use a sturdy jack to raise and support the vehicle.
    • Using jack stands, raise and support the rear axle by about two inches.
  3. Remove the rear shocks. These steps are the same for each shock.
    • Remove the two bolts which secure the hydraulic line to the shock. CAUTION: Hyrdraulic fluid is pressurized and may spray out. Be sure to wear proper eye protection.
    • While supporting the rear axle, remove the top nut that holds the shock to the vehicle.
    • Remove the sway bar end links and lower the sway bar away from the body.
    • Remove the mounting bolt on the lower shock mounting bolt
    • Remove the shock from the vehicle.
  4. Install the new strut and shock assembly.
    • Place coil springs into the top position first.
    • Using the OE upper spring isolator, position the bottom coil so that it stops at the bottom spring seat.
    • Install the top of the rear shock and loosely secure with the rubber grommets and nuts.
  5. Attach the new strut assembly to the suspension.
    • Raise the rear axle and install the bottom of the shocks and secure with the shock bolt.
    • Raise sway bar and attach sway bar end links.
    • Tighten the top shock nut until the rubber grommets flatten out against the washer.
    • Your kit should include Allen-head bolts. Install these into all hydraulic shock lines. Tie the lines up out of the way.
  6. Finishing up.
    • Replace the wheels of your Lexus.
    • Safely lower the vehicle.
    • Torque to factory specifications.

Warnings

  • A sudden release of pressure may cause personal injury or damage to the vehicle. Take special precaution when removing the hydraulic lines as hydraulic fluid is under pressure and spray out. Make sure to wear all of the following safety equipment: gloves, goggles, ear protection. Ensure that vehicle is secured in the raised position before undertaking any repairs.
