Create a Faux Paint Antique Finish
Antique furniture and home decorations can be expensive and hard to find. Faux painting is an effective way to create the antique look you crave without emptying your wallet. You can also turn trash to treasure and sell it for twice the original price.
Steps
- Clean item with a damp cloth.
- Wipe item with a dry cloth to remove excess damp from step 1.
- Paint with a base color. This will show through any cracks and aging marks.
- Let dry thoroughly.
- Paint with Create a Weathered Effect With Wall Paint medium.
- Let dry.
- Paint with a second color. This color will crack, letting the base color show.
- Let dry thoroughly.
- Paint item with a clear sealant, available at most paint stores.
Tips
- The crackle medium will create small cracks if the second paint color is applied within an hour. If you wait 2 hours to apply the second color the cracks will be longer and deeper.
- You can let the paint dry naturally, or you can speed up the process by using a hair dryer. Using a hair dryer takes approximately 1/3 the normal drying time.
- Crackle medium can be hard to find because most craft stores have stopped carrying it. Sherwin-Williams paint stores carry a small can for a decent price.
Warnings
- Do not overlap the #2 color paint. When it is overlapped it pulls the crackle medium off of the item. To avoid this use a small roller brush and make small brush strokes in the same direction.
