Cross a Road in India

Crossing a road in India, especially in cities, might be an extremely difficult and sometimes dangerous task. Traffic rules there can be different, and roads are very congested. And for foreigners, this might just turn out to be a real headache everyday, if they happen to stay in India for a few weeks/months. This article attempts to give simple steps to this problem.

Steps

  1. Try to cross the road with other locals who cross the road at the same time.
    • Make eye contact with the driver who is nearing you, so that he/she moves away for sure.
    • If you are hit by an inattentive driver, remember that passers-by will be on your side and will help you.
    • Again, the most important thing is not to panic.
    • Don't forget, cars are coming from the right! If you live in a country where you drive on the right line, you'll need some time to get used to it. Remember, look on your right before you cross... not on your left.
    • If you are afraid of crossing by yourself, follow another person.
    • Consider taking a vehicle if you are scared to walk. Taxis and automatic rickshaws are available.
    • Remember to be patient, when a good time comes, cross the street.

Warnings

  • Never run while you cross the road.
  • Never freeze on busy roads or walk back; if you have crossed a part of the road and can't move further, stop your panicking and tackle the road lane by lane. Don't just stop there -- drivers in cities are unwilling to go around you; so once you feel you can continue crossing, do so.
  • Some people in India(locals)are used to crossing the road very fast and risky,do not copy them if you are a tourist as you might get hurt.
  • Look on both sides before you cross the road.
