Customize Call of Duty for Multiplayer

CoD 4 is an extremely customizable game when playing Online. Here are some tips and tricks to help you when using Create-a-Class.

Steps

  1. You can have any gun for any map with the perks but make sure you don't have low range weapons on a large map unless you know you can get their side of the map without dying.
  2. So:
    • When a point is guarded very well by the enemy, flank (take the back route). This applies to all game modes with some sort of objective.
    • Grenades and special/tactical grenades help really well against dug in enemies ('campers').
    • Check the radar once in a while. It shows enemy movement, but it isn't completely up to date so try not to rely on it.
    • Snipers often put Claymores by the entrances to where they are so be careful.
    • When an enemy is at very close range, you probably won't get a chance to ADS (Aim Down Sights) so fire off the hip, try not to use a whole clip though otherwise you may run out of ammo whilst on a streak or when in need of it.
    • Double-tap and stopping power both multiply their respective attribute by 1.4. This means that a gun shooting an already powerful round, will benefit more from double tap, and that a fast gun benefits more from stopping power.
    • When 'camping' in a building, use the element of surprise to your benefit. Don't stay in the same spot.
    • Dodging enemy sniper fire is done easily by sprinting, jumping, ducking then sprinting further. Do it when you're about 75% of the total path. It helps not getting shot in the chest, which would result in your death.
    • Unless an enemy is at close range, shoot in bursts (3-4 bullets).
    • Know what you're doing. The better the players, the more a game gets chess-like properties. That means you have to plan moves ahead, and keep their possible moves in mind. (Example: You're lying prone 'camping' by a doorway. Somebody can easily throw in a grenade and kill you before you get away.)
    • Try keeping your Kill Death Ratio above 1, it will help you finding a productive playstyle, keeping balance between playing defensive and offensive.
  3. Call of Duty Game Types
    • CoD4 has 6 game types, choose the right one for you. Some people like the fast fragging action on free-for-all or team death match.
    • Each game type offers a unique way to approach the game. Some are better for sniping while others are better for assault rifles and sub machine guns.
  4. Level up fast by playing Headquarters or Search and Destroy (you only get one life in Search and Destroy so play more tactically).

Tips

  • Drawing a secondary is faster than drawing a primary. Think about whether you're going to swap your secondary for a primary or not.
  • Don't overuse sprint; it leaves you wide open to attack. When your rounding a corner SLOW DOWN. Often times your opponent will be running around the corner. If you're not, then they will have to raise their gun while you're pulling the trigger instead.
  • Note that having the enemy know your position can be a double-edged sword. Sure, you can expect the pineapples to come flying, but you can also reposition yourself to confuse your enemies and make them come to you giving you a plethora of kills. This is especially efficient on hardcore with a silencer and UAV jammer.
  • Snipers are best used at long range but can be used in close combat too.
  • There are two perks in the game you can have without taking up a perk. For martyrdom just throw a grenade if you know your about to die. And you are equally quiet using the dead silence perk if you crouch-walk.
  • Develop a style of play, some styles of playing are considered 'nooby'. Ignore what people say and do what gets you kills.
  • Try not to rely to much on your mini-map. If you have a UAV up, it is slightly delayed and some people may not show up on it as they have UAV Jammer (Tier 2 Perk). Your UAV can help you counter flankers and rushers.
  • Flashes and stuns bounce off walls, use this to your advantage.
  • Learn the map before you play it online, there are lots of good spots in each level.
  • Martyrdom grenades have a short fuse and can be picked up and THROWN at the enemy team. Ever thrown a martyrdom grenade and earned a triple kill? The reaction is priceless.
  • When playing Search and Destroy make an offensive and defensive class. For your offense class put on the bomb squad perk, and for defense use claymores/C4.
  • If you notice the enemy team frequenting an area, pitch a tent and make smores. If they can't learn from their mistakes they deserve to be killed over and over again.
  • Pay attention to the sounds all around you. Footsteps, reloads and weapon changes can help you find an enemy. Different maps also have different floors that make different sounds when ran across.
  • Every map has "Hot spot" camping positions. Learn these and periodically fill them with lead.
  • Don't have a silencer and want to stay quiet? Use your knife!
  • Learn the hierarchy of weapon range. SMG's and shotguns dominate everything at short range, Assault rifles for medium range, and sniper rifle's for long range. (Keep in mind some players can use most guns with a red dot as a sniper!)
  • Leaning around corners is very handy when checking out a dangerous area, leaning around corners is also a very good form of covering yourself.
  • Remember if you stay in one position the enemy will keep on coming after you until you're dead, you may want to change places every now and then unless you can easily defend your position.
  • When someone shoots on the radar without a silencer he will be spotted, so beware of your shots and spot enemies on the radar; it is really useful.
