Delete Cookies Using the Safari Web Browser

Internet browsers store small files called "cookies" containing user data like passwords and usernames. For privacy reasons, you may not want on your computer. Here is a step-by-step on how to delete these cookies on your Safari browser. Removing cookies is as easy as going to your browser's preferences, figuring out where the cookies are located and choosing the option to remove them.

Steps

  1. Select "Preferences" from the Safari menu.
  2. Under the "Security" tab, select "Show Cookies".
  3. Select "Remove All". Alternatively, if you only wish to delete a select group of cookies, highlight them and select "Remove".
  4. Read the confirmation message and click "Remove". Your cookies are now deleted!
  5. Click "Done" and close the dialog box.

Safari 5.1 (For Lion and Snow Leopard): New Display

  1. Select "Preferences" from the Safari menu.
  2. Under the "Privacy" tab, select "Details". This will take you to a display of various tracking data. Note that Safari 5.1 has modified this display to be more “user-friendly” but less-detailed than in previous versions, meaning you can no longer surgically select which cookies you wish to delete for a particular site.
    • If you wish to have more control over what you remove, see the workaround method below.
  3. Select "Remove all". Alternatively, if you only wish to delete the cookies of a few select sites, highlight them and click "Remove".
  4. Read the confirmation message and click "Remove". Your cookies are now deleted.
  5. Click "Done" and close the dialog box.

Safari 5.1 (For Lion and Snow Leopard): New Display Workaround

  1. Select "Preferences" from the Safari menu.
  2. Under the "Advanced" tab, select "Show Develop menu in menu bar". This will enable you to see a more detailed list of the cookies associated with a particular site.
    • If you wish to simply dump a site’s cookie bundle, use the previous method.
  3. Select "Show Web Inspector". This is found in the Developer Menu you just enabled.
  4. Under the "Resources" tab, expand the "Cookies" folder. From here, you can browse each site’s various cookies.
  5. Use the "X" button to delete cookies. Simply highlight the cookie(s) you wish to delete and click "X" at the bottom of the window.
  6. Close the Web Inspector. If you wish to re-hide the Developer Menu, simply go back to Preferences > Advanced and deselect Show Develop menu in menu bar.

Permanently Deleting Cookies

  1. Under the "Safari" menu, select "Preferences".
    • Under the "Security" tab, select "Never" next to "Accept Cookies".

Turning off the WiFi or Ethernet

  1. Turn off the WiFi or Ethernet connection.
  2. click Safari>Preferences>Privacy>Remove all website data, Click Remove all website data again for sneaky, clingy cookies to be removed completely.
  3. click Safari >Reset Safari to remove history/cache, then click Safari >Quit Safari.
  4. Turn on the WiFi or Ethernet connection.
  5. Restart Safari.
  6. Search for any annoying highlighted results that you wanted gone. They should no longer be there.

Tips

  • Cookies help websites remember who you are and what your preferences are. If you delete all your cookies, you will need to log back in to any websites you had stored passwords or other account information.
