Design Business Cards from Home
Whether you’re playing around with business card design for your business, you can easily design business cards from your home computer with Microsoft Word 2003, which is included in Microsoft Office Suite on most computers. There are certain items that you must include on your business card (see the Business Card Checklist), and other items that are optional.

Designing Your Own Business Cards
- Get a business card checklist together. Here’s a checklist for you to make sure you don’t forget anything to include on your business card. The first six items are essential, and the last six are optional, although an email address and logo are very important to include if you have the room: Name of Individual, Job Title, Name of Business or Organization, Address, Phone Number, Web Page Address, Logo, Email Address, Tag line or description of Business or Organization, Fax Number, Graphic Image(s) including purely decorative elements, List of services or products. No matter what you include, you can follow these steps to design great business cards that reflect your business, your brand and you.
- Decide if you want a vertical or horizontal layout. You might want to sketch out a design on paper before starting in Word.
- Pick the colors you want to use. It’s best to limit your colors to two or three since you don’t have much space to work with. If you’re using a color logo, that will be enough color for your business card.
- Pick a font that reflects your brand and business. A fun event planning company could use a fun font like Cooper Black or Juice. A more serious business, like injury lawyers, should use professional fonts, like Times or Georgia.
- Buy Avery business card paper.
- Open Microsoft Word. Open the File menu and choose New.
- Open the Tools menu and choose Envelopes and Labels.
- Click Options and confirm that Avery Standard is selected in the “Product type” menu.
- Choose your type of Avery business card paper, probably “3612 – Business Card” in the “Product Number” menu. Click OK.
- Click New Document. A label template appears with the correct margins for a business card.
- Select Picture from the Insert menu and browse to where your logo or another image you want to use is located (probably in your Pictures folder or on the Desktop).
- Adjust the logo or other image to the size you want by pulling on the corners of the box containing the graphic.
- Choose a font for the text and type your name, business address, phone number, etc. on whichever side you want it.
- Copy your design and paste it into each space on the page.
- Open Print Preview to see how the cards look. If you don’t like the alignment or need to make another change, keep changing your design and looking at it in Print Preview until you like it.
- Save your design when you’re happy with it.
- Put your blank business card paper in the printer.
- Press Print on the toolbar when you’re ready to print one page of business cards. You might want to print them on a blank piece of paper first to make sure you like the design on paper. (To save even more ink, print out your design before you copy and paste the design in Step 13.)
