Do Triple Threat in Basketball
The name for the "triple threat" position derives from the fact that the offensive player with the basketball has three choices regarding what to do with the ball. He or she can either dribble, pass, or shoot the ball. Because of this variety of choices defenders must give the offensive player in the triple threat position a wide berth. The offensive player, therefore, has plenty of room to operate.

Steps
- To be in the triple threat position, you must still have your dribble. The best way is to receive a pass from a teammate.
- After you have received the pass, bring the ball down to your hip and face your defender.
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees bent, and in a slight crouch.
- Grasp the ball with your weak hand on the side of the ball and your strong hand on top.
- Bend both elbows so they are approximately at right angles.
- Once you are in the position you can either pass the ball to a teammate, dribble around the defender, or shoot the ball. Your decision will be influenced by how the defender is playing you.
Tips
- Try to see if the defender can see through your triple threat, and never wait too long to make up your mind.
- Have a firm, comfortable grip on the ball so that you do not drop it.
- Use ball fakes to lure the defender into over-playing you.
Warnings
- If you are holding the ball after picking up your dribble, the triple threat is no longer an option.
- Never move the foot that is planted on the ground. You will be called for traveling.
