Do a Flip Throw in Soccer

A flip throw-in allows you to successfully throw the ball in to play while also allowing you to throw the ball further.

Steps

  1. Grasp the ball with only one hand on the sides of the ball so your thumbs almost touch.
  2. Stand 15 to 20 feet away from the touch line. (It is illegal for your whole foot to go over the touchline). However, it is also illegal to land too far from the touch line. The limit is usually about 2 yards/2 meters.
  3. Begin running with a burst of speed, taking no more than three or four steps.
  4. Plant the ball on the ground.
  5. Flip your legs up as you plant the ball to complete a front handspring.
  6. Use your momentum to fling the ball as you become upright again.
  7. Land on your feet.
  8. Make sure not to lift either foot so as to lose contact with the ground if you are playing in a real game. Dragging your foot is acceptable as long as you do not go past the touch line.

Tips

  • Make sure your ball is fully inflated, if it's not, your balance on the ball will be off.
  • Practice this throw-in without the ball to start. If you have access to a tumbling mat, learn on it.
  • Make sure the ground is level and sturdy if not you may already have started your flip and land in a fatal situation.
  • You can start with the ball on the ground, too.
  • When you are placing the ball onto the ground during the flip, the more you extend your arms out, the more power and momentum your throw will have. It will also be easier to land.
  • Make sure to have legs extended in the air, not bent.
  • For more distance, try releasing the ball at different points of the handspring.
  • After you're comfortable doing it without the ball, practice on a slight decline with a ball.

Warnings

  • Be careful if you are just starting out. Have someone spot you at first so you don't hurt yourself.
  • Before doing the throw-in make sure you see where your players are or your throw could go to the other team.
  • This is a professional soccer move and should be practiced before being coach, ask him/her to help you with the front the ball.
