Draw Sheep

Almost everyone has tried counting sheep in order to fall asleep. Follow this tutorial to learn to draw one of these cute, snooze-inducing farm animals.

Steps

  1. Draw a large, round-edged rectangle as a base. This will soon become your sheep's body, so it should take up the majority of the page (remember to leave room for the legs below, however).
  2. Add a medium-sized oval at the upper left corner of the rectangle. Make sure the oval is tilted a bit to the left, so as to look more like a realistic head.
  3. Create the face by drawing a smaller oval overlapping the upper left side of the initial oval. Make sure part of the oval is sticking out. Draw an angled rectangle attached to the bottom left part of the smaller oval. This rectangle should be pointed slightly downward.

  4. Draw the legs. To begin with, sketch two slanted ovals for the front legs. Note that they should be overlapping each other and the body, but that about half of each thigh still goes beneath the lower part of the body. Draw the back legs the same way as the front, but have them rest on the right part of the body.
  5. Add a small rectangle at the end of each thigh. Draw trapezoids beneath the rectangles. In each trapezoid, sketch in a small slanted line, about one-third into the shape. This will later form the small gaps in the hooves.
  6. Add details. For the tail, draw a small oval, tilted downward on upper right part of the body. Next, for the ears, draw two small ovals, pointed outward a bit, on either side of the face's oval. Inside the face's oval, draw a very tiny football shape. Add a little circle inside it to serve as the eye.
  7. Draw wool on your sheep. Create a fluffy, cloudy outline around the entire body, all four thighs, and two-thirds of the face.
  8. Outline your sketch. During this step you will be able to round off the hooves a little, as well as make gaps in them. Be certain to round off the tip of the nose to give the sheep less of a block-like snout.
  9. Color your sheep any way you like. Add some shadows/highlights to the back of the leg, the belly, and the hooves. Be creative with the appearance of your sheep!

Tips

  • Draw lightly in pencil so that you can easily rub out mistakes.
  • If you want to use markers/watercolors to color your drawing, use paper that is relatively thick and line over your pencil more darkly before doing so.
