Draw a Pink Flamingo

A flamingo is a bird with a huge beak. They make good lawn ornaments and sometimes croquet mallets (like in Alice from Alice in Wonderland), but mostly they're just interesting animals to see at the zoo. This tutorial will show you how to draw a pink flamingo.

Steps

  1. Draw an oval placed diagonally. This will serve as the head. Try to put it in the upper right corner of your paper, since the rest of the flamingo will take up significantly more room than the head.
  2. Draw an upside-down teardrop shape overlapping the bottom right section of the oval. It should be slightly longer than the head itself and end in a curved point. This is the overall shape for the beak.
  3. On the left side of the paper, under the head/beak, draw a big, horizontal teardrop shape. This shape will be the body, and should look similar to the beak, except that its point curves less sharply.
  4. Connect the head and the body with a gentle, S-shaped line. This will give you the shape of the neck; try to make it as proportional as possible. Do the same with the leg, which extends straight down from the middle of the body and ends in a trapezoidal foot.
  5. Outline the shape of the flamingo over the sketch and add details. Detail the beak, a small eye on the head, and the neck over the S line. Sketch feathers lightly all over the body. Finish up with the long, bony leg and detail the webbing of the foot.
  6. Erase all the sketch lines and add in color. Use red and pale pink for the body and green and pink for the legs. You're done!

Tips

  • If you want to use markers/watercolors to color your drawing, use paper that is relatively thick and line over your pencil more darkly before doing so.
  • Draw lightly in pencil so that you can easily rub out mistakes.
