Eliminate Annoying Beeps and Drop Outs on Your Cordless Phone

Have you experienced strange new noise on your cordless phone? Depending on whether you are the person at home or the outside caller, it may manifest itself as a loud beep interrupting the call, or just a loss of sound for a second. It may happen sporadically with no apparent pattern. Do you have a wireless internet (Wi-Fi) network in your house? It is likely the source of the problem.

Steps

  1. Check your phone to see what frequency it operates on. If it is a 2.4 Ghz phone, then the cause of the interference is likely a wireless internet connection. A Wi-Fi or 802.11 network operates on the same 2.4 Ghz spectrum as your cordless phone.
  2. Ask your neighbors. If you don't have a wireless network, it still could be one of a neighbor if you have people living close by.
  3. Make a 30 minute phone call and keep track of the number of interruptions. Be sure to alert the person you're calling to tell you if they hear an interruption or beep.
  4. Disconnect your wireless internet, and make another 30 minute call. If the interruptions are gone, you've found the culprit.
  5. Consider purchasing a 900 Mhz or 5.8 Ghz phone instead. Both of these are free from interference from Wi-Fi networks.
